MSU Denver Family Literacy Program has an opening for a part-time Parent Time/Early Literacy (PT/EL) specialist to work with adults in their Families Learning Together program at three sites in west Denver. Position is semester-based. Candidate will teach classes in Parent Time classes and Early Literacy for a five-component Family Literacy Program.

Duties/Responsibilities

The PT/EL specialist is responsible for instruction, materials and activities of both the Parent Time and the Interactive Literacy Activities components (including take-home activities) based on the FLT curriculum; summer literacy projects; and evening literacy activities among three Family Literacy sites. The PT/ELS will:
-Provide Parent Time classes are scheduled weekly at each of the three family literacy sites;
-Work as a team with Early FL Coordinator, ECE teachers, lead teachers, home visitor and school age elementary classroom teachers to coordinate Parent and ILA activities;
-Monitor requirements for the Colorado Basic Literacy Act, making sure that the literacy skills of school age students are diagnosed, monitored and tracked;
-Work with teachers to design trainings and activities for parents based on needs of ILP and IEP students;
-Stay apprised of the latest Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR) and special needs findings, and provide workshops to FLT staff and parents as needed;
-Oversee screening and preparation, testing, referrals to counseling, developmental and support services of Family Literacy Program applicants, in partnership with school and FLT staff, as needed;
-Attend workshops, trainings and in-services as requested by Coordinator;
-Foster encouraging and supportive learning environment for families by responding to instructional needs and concerns.



Required Qualifications

-Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field
-Training in Reading Recovery or other early reading strategies
-Significant experience in instruction of children ECE to 2nd grade in Literacy, Language Arts, and/or Reading Intervention Strategies
-Strong skills and demonstrated experience working with parents and parenting groups
-Knowledge of current Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR) techniques and materials
-Ability to work and be sensitive to the educational needs of immigrant, low income, and diverse urban populations



Preferred Qualifications

-Master’s degree in Education or related field
-Bilingual in English/Spanish
