Position Summary

The Student Retention Specialist is primarily engaged in working with students from a migrant and seasonal farm worker background one-on-one, or in small groups, in an effort to increase first year retention and completion, as well as year over year retention from the students’ first year at the University to their second year. The CAMP program, College Assistance Migrant Program, is a federally funded grant program designed to assist and enable students from a migrant and seasonal farm worker background to attend college.

The University is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

This is a grant funded position.

60% of the time the Student Retention Specialist will:
1. Work extensively with CAMP students one-on-one to help them determine their educational and personal needs in order to direct them to the appropriate classes, advisers, programs, resources, tutors, and/or counselors.
2. Assist students with goal setting and declaration of majors.
3. Assist students with scholarship efforts with the end result of increasing students’ scholarship dollars for the following academic year.
4. Submit bi-monthly reports to the CAMP Director.

15% of the time the Student Retention Specialist will:
1. Maintain direct communication with advisers in the Academic Advising Center, the College Tutoring Center, and any counselors assigned to the CAMP Program from the Student Counseling Center.
2. Coordinate with other programs and resources across campus to provide services for CAMP students.

10% of the time the Student Retention Specialist will:
1. Track and maintain records of student data.

10% of the time the Student Retention Specialist will:
1. Work with the rest of the CAMP staff to plan and coordinate services.

5% of the time the Student Retention Specialist will:
1. Assume any other CAMP responsibility as may be assigned by the Director of CAMP.

The position also involves some minimal out-of-state travel to 1-2 conferences per year.

Required Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree.
-Fluency in the English and Spanish languages (speaking, reading, and writing).
- Experience working with migrant and seasonal farm worker populations.
-Experience working with students, and administrators within a higher education institution.
-Experience providing academic advising and Financial Aid guidance to students.

Preferred Qualifications

-Master’s degree.
-Previous experience working with a CAMP, HEP, or similar program as a retention specialist, student coordinator, or recruiter.
-Experience with maintaining records in a professional capacity.
