Position Description: The Department of Engineering Technology, which is housed in the College of Science and Engineering at Texas State University is seeking an associate professor of practice or professor of practice in the area of Construction Science and Management (CSM) with a residential construction emphasis. This position will be a non-tenure-line, nine-month faculty position having a contract term not to exceed five years, subject to annual reappointment review, and renewable upon expiration of the initial term. The CSM program at Texas State is accredited through the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). This growing program currently enjoys 453 majors, ten dedicated faculty, and an active Industrial Advisory Council. The CSM program sponsors two construction and concrete industry career fairs each year, which attract 60-70 employers, making it the largest event of its kind on campus. The department also offers undergraduate degrees in concrete industry management (47 majors), engineering technology (270 majors), and technology management (23 majors). At the graduate level, the Master of Science in technology management degree is offered with specializations in construction management, manufacturing management, and industrial management. The College of Science and Engineering is home to 6 academic departments and the Ingram School of Engineering. The College offers an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in materials science, engineering, and commercialization.
The selected candidate will excel as an instructor and be able to assist the CSM program in developing a residential emphasis within the existing CSM major. An expertise in several of the following residential topics is expected: residential construction techniques; interpreting construction documents including residential plans, specifications and contracts; estimating; scheduling; residential MEPs; land development; sales and marketing; construction and owner financing; IRC building codes and the permitting process. The candidate will be expected to be familiar with common electronics technology used in the field along with contemporary software used to estimate, schedule and design residential structures. The person will also be expected to assist with the wider teaching mission of the CSM program by teaching such courses as safety, introduction to the construction industry, environmentally conscious design and construction, construction contracts, construction materials, and the senior capstone course, for example. Departmental service is also expected along with related travel. As a non-tenure-line associate professor or professor of practice, the candidate will not be expected to engage in research, external funding, or publishing, but collaborative participation with colleagues in such activities can be considered in the annual evaluation. A professor of practice will have two principle roles on the faculty, one relating to educational contributions and the other to industry interface. Prominent features of the candidate’s responsibilities will include teaching, coaching student competition teams, travel with students and colleagues to trade shows, competitions and meetings of professional associations, internship management, career fair management, graduate placement, industry outreach, advisory board relations, and program promotion and visibility across the construction industry community. Further, the candidate will cooperate with colleagues in intern supervision, program development, curriculum initiatives, conducting learning outcomes assessment, maintaining accreditation, and providing career counseling and academic advising to CSM majors. The candidate could possibly serve as faculty advisor, or co-advisor, for the student chapter of the Construction Student Association (CSA). The candidate will also engage in departmental and university service activities.
A graduate or professional degree, master’s or doctoral level, in construction management, technology or technology management (with construction emphasis), construction science, construction engineering management or construction engineering technology, architecture, architectural engineering, civil engineering, civil engineering technology, or business. A significant number of documented years of construction management industry experience in the residential industry; for the rank of associate professor, a minimum of 10 years, and for professor, a minimum of 15 years. An undergraduate degree in construction management, technology or technology management (with construction emphasis), construction science, construction engineering management or construction engineering technology, architecture, architectural engineering, civil engineering or civil engineering technology, or business. If the graduate degree is in business, the undergraduate degree must be in one of the construction-relevant disciplines. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and department established standards.
Professional engineering licensure, registered professional architect, and/or other professional certifications relevant to the construction industry (e.g., LEED Associate Professional, AIC Certified Professional Constructor, Certified Safety Professional, etc.), additional years of construction management industry experience beyond the minimums required for either academic rank, prior teaching experience at the university, community college, or public secondary school levels, relevant professional presentations, workshops, or publications, leadership positions in relevant professional associations, recognition by peers, or awards for contributions to the profession and/or industry.
