Major Gift Officers are responsible for soliciting six and seven figure gifts for the University. Participates in the planning and implementation of the university's fundraising efforts in support of current operations, endowment and other capital purposes from all private sources. (May be located in Richmond, VA or a major metropolitan area in the Northeast.)
- In conjunction with the Director of Major Gifts, creates an annual personal and comprehensive development operating plan outlining individual goals and objectives.
- Serve as primary staff for rated individual prospects of $100,000 or more, developing and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies. This includes building, managing and soliciting a portfolio of major gift prospects, giving primary focus to that portfolio's top prospects targeting gift solicitation (generally) within a two-year timeframe. Conducts face-to-face contacts with prospects and donors; a minimum of 18-20 significant visits will be scheduled monthly for the purpose of field research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Travels extensively, both regionally and nationally, for the purpose of prospect field research and prospect and donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Provides, within identified timeframes, reports and other essential information including, but not limited to: contact reports, proposal updates, annual plan of operation, travel plans, and solicitation tracking requests; develop and implement individual, corporate and foundation prospect identification and qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies in support of both the university's fundraising program and the corporate or university's identified fundraising priorities.
- Initiate regional plans for major alumni strongholds with alumni relations, annual fund, career development and other departments.
- Analyzes potential donor research materials to target appropriate givers.
- Assists the Director of Major Gifts in staffing the college leadership boards by making recommendations for university leadership boards as appropriate. Assists the Director in managing volunteers for prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Prioritizes work to ensure attendance at all Development and Advancement staff meetings.
- Knowledge of fundraising practices and procedures within the higher education field.
- Essential skills include the ability to set priorities and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, strong personal and professional integrity, good judgment, and attention to detail.
- Team oriented and positive outlook.
- Required: Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree and 5 - 7 years of experience in fundraising or equivalent years of experience with a record of individualized solicitation success at the major gift level and volunteer management experience.
- Full-time, exempt position
- Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
- Some evenings and weekends required; Must be comfortable traveling extensively.
