The Senior Manager of Diversity and Inclusion is dedicated to strategically building and strengthening communities among Stanford's alumni of color and the LGBTQ, First Gen, and female alumni communities. The Senior Manager will lead and oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of new and continuing diversity efforts to ensure that different perspectives, experiences, and cultures are represented on Stanford's boards, committees, and councils.

Founded in 1892 by the first graduating class, the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) has a mission to reach, serve and engage all Stanford alumni and students; to foster a lifelong intellectual and emotional connection between the university and its graduates; and to provide the university with goodwill and support. In support of this mission, SAA engages in a wide range of activities including: event production, volunteer recruitment and management, publishing, travel/study programs, in-person and virtual community management, career networking services, alumni education, and multi-media broad-based communications.

The Senior Manager is part of the Alumni Communities (AC) Department. AC empowers alumni volunteers to develop programs and events that provide opportunities for alumni to connect intellectually and emotionally to the university, strengthen their relationships with one another and foster a sense of Stanford community where they live.

The ideal candidate will be committed to the importance of diversity and have experience managing volunteers. Familiarity with the Stanford community, the Alumni Association, and its services is highly desired. This role will require polished communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong presentation skills. The ability to employ diplomacy with a high regard for building and maintaining important internal and external relationships is key.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee the Diversity Leadership Initiative

Develop and implement a strategic plan to build a pipeline of diverse alumni volunteer leaders to increase the representation of women and alumni of color on senior Stanford boards, committees, and councils. Represent the organization to internal and external groups regarding diversity program activities. Ascertain leadership needs from boards and committees across campus, identify and research viable candidates, serve as a resource for alumni seeking leadership opportunities, and provide guidance for campus colleagues regarding their alumni leadership needs. Monitor progress of the efforts to increase diversity at senior volunteer levels and provide regular status updates. Create best practices to ensure all alumni feel welcome and included in SAA programs and events. Benchmark efforts at other schools.

Manage National Affinity Clubs Serve as the liaison for Stanford's current national diversity clubs and assist with the creation of new groups as appropriate. Recruit, train, and oversee volunteers, provide strategy and guidance to alumni leaders, and serve as a resource for their efforts to strengthen their communities. Provide support and direction for alumni “Summits.” Manage budgets and cost negotiations as appropriate.

Build and Maintain Relationships with Campus Partners

Partner with the community centers as well as other campus departments and centers (First Gen Office, Haas Center for Public Service, BEAM, alumni relations departments at the Schools) to ensure collaboration and partnership on issues around diversity at Stanford. Collaborate with campus offices in the implementation of annual university diversity events, such as Reunion Homecoming and Commencement activities. Participate in regular meetings with campus partners to share best practices and discuss opportunities and challenges around issues of diversity.

Oversee the SNAP (Stanford Needs Alumni Perspectives) Program

Develop outreach strategies to identify appropriate university projects that would benefit from alumni insights and guidance. Work in partnership with sponsoring departments to create a meaningful experience for alumni volunteers and an effective outcome for the sponsoring departments. MINIMUM QUalifications
Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to represent the university professionally both internally and externally.
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with volunteer development and oversight.
  • Strong interpersonal, team, and leadership skills; tact and flexibility in working with diverse population groups.
  • Ability to juggle a vast quantity of incoming information, interruptions, and inquiries with a high level of professionalism and tolerance for ambiguity.
  • Proven decision-making skills and the ability to understand and solve complex questions.
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new systems. Certifications and Licenses:
  • Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver's License. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.

    In support of SAA's values and mission and to engage and interact closer with our customers, the alumni of Stanford University, full-time employees are expected to spend approximately sixteen (16) hours (without additional pay) over the course of the year staffing events outside of their regular job duties. Typically these events occur during the evening or weekend. They include such SAA-sponsored events as Commencement, Reunion Homecoming and STARS.
