The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) seeks applicants for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor rank, Family Studies position to begin August 2018. We are particularly interested in a colleague whose research focuses on family and other intimate relationships among diverse populations. The ideal candidate would have a strong scholarly record that attends to context, is methodologically rigorous, and complements one or more of the department's additional core research areas including sociocultural context, human development, and young children's care and education.
The successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the family studies core area, maintain an active research program, seek external funds to support research, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students from diverse racial, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, and support the graduate and undergraduate programs through departmental service. The position involves working in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary department intentionally structured to prepare students and scholars to work effectively with diverse families and populations.
This is a 9-month full-time tenure-track position beginning August 1, 2018. Salary for this position is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The HDFS Department within the School of Health and Human Sciences is ranked as one of the top HDFS graduate programs in the country. The department is committed to interdisciplinary study, diversity, and internationalization and has 27 full-time faculty, over 700 undergraduate majors, 150 undergraduate minors, and approximately 100 graduate students in MEd, MS, and PhD programs. Students of color make up over 50% of the student population in the department. The HDFS Department is committed to a faculty that is representative of the diverse community and student population served. M.S. and doctoral students in Family Studies examine the role of individual, biological, relational, social, and cultural factors in diverse family relationships and implications for family members. The emphasis in the department on racial, ethnic and cultural variation acknowledges the merit of both between and within-group approaches for understanding family and other close relationships.

Support for research and grant activity with diverse families includes the university's Center for New North Carolinians, the Child and Family Research Network, the Institute for Community and Economic Engagement, and the Center for Youth, Family and Community Partnerships. Additional research supports include UNCG's Office of Research and Engagement, the Office of Sponsored Programs, facilities for the integrated collection of observational and physiological data including a newly installed state of the art fMRI facility, and centrally-managed statistical software available to all campus researchers for the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.
Doctoral degree (requirements completed by July 1, 2018) in the field of Human Development and Family Studies, Sociology, Psychology, or closely related field. Evidence of competence in college instruction. A record of scholarly publications and evidence of success or potential for success in securing external funding for research.
Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students of color representing diverse racial, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds;
Strong methodological background evidencing a variety of research methods for studying families;
Expertise in the analysis of dyadic or family level data;
Experience in community-engaged research;
An interest in families and health or health disparities;
Teaching and/or research experience focused on contextual influences or the intersection of two or more social positions (e.g., race, ethnicity, culture, gender, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, immigration status).
