Job Description
The Advanced Practice Provider's (APP) in Duke Neurosurgery play an integral role in the management of neurosurgery patients, including all aspects of pre and post-operative care. Neurosurgery APP's work under the supervision of the Neurosurgeon.

Work Hours
Primary work hours will be 8:00AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday (40 hours).

Clinic
Maintain a clinic of up to 8 sessions per week with supervising physician at Duke South Clinics. Expected to see patients in 30 minute intervals with overbooking appointments as appropriate. Will perform a complete history and physical and then present the patient to supervising attending. Will see scheduled postoperative and wound checks, screen new patients with vague diagnoses and make arrangements for further diagnostic testing. Work closely with all supervising physician to determine appropriate treatment plans for each patient and surgical needs. Prior to clinic screen the clinic schedule to make sure we have the appropriate films, reports, and clinic notes. Schedule required tests prior to patient visit. Treat patients in clinic for suture removals and wound checks post operatively. Perform general office duties, develop office protocols, triage of patient phone calls, complete disability and FMLA forms, edit clinical notes, and pull radiology films as needed. Responsible for ensuring patient and pharmacies receive information needed to fill and refill patient prescriptions.

Operating Room
In charge of patients' operative schedules. Will see them in clinic with supervising attending, review the surgical procedure, complete all necessary paperwork related to the surgery, schedule preoperative screening, post the cases, schedule admission to the hospital, and ensure that the patient has appropriate discharge instructions and follow-up. Depending on the surgery, may need to coordinate 2-3 surgeons. On an as needed basis, also coordinate ancillary staff, external co-surgeons and vendor support as needed.

Patient contact
Interact very closely with patients. Spend time in clinic and on the phone educating patients and families, answer questions and concerns, and make treatment decisions. Document all phone interactions in an EPIC phone note. Relay all pertinent pathology and lab results to patients and make appropriate follow up as needed. Hospital responsibilities- Round on in-patients with a chart note. Ensure that appropriate consults are taking place, follow up on the recommendations of consulting teams, order appropriate diagnostic testing, and follow-up lab work.

Consulting services
Review films with neuroradiologists and any other service to help make appropriate patient treatment decisions.

Other duties
Coordinate student observations in clinic and the operating room. Responsible for charges of clinic billing (except operative billing). Attend neurosurgery grand rounds and conference.

Education
Work requires graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies. - OR - completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing

Experience
At least one year working in an outpatient setting is strongly preferred.

Licenses, Certifications and Registrations
• Current NC License with the NC Medical Board
• Current DEA registration
• Credentialing through Duke University Health System
• American Red Cross BLS and ACLS certification
• Adequate CME as outlined by NC Medical Board, Duke Credentialing Office and AANP
• Completion of required Duke modules (safety, HIPAA, etc.)
• Completion of Maestro training
