General Summary of Position:

In coordination with the Labor Education Director, the Labor Education Coordinator will teach non-credit conferences, classes and workshops in the University, Merrimack Valley and North Shore communities.  S/he will work directly with students to enhance their UML learning experience by providing labor experience and resources in classes, creating internships, and assist in locating and developing community service projects. S/he will assist with the day-to-day functions within the Labor Education Program and serve as the communications specialist.

This position is contingent upon funding. This is a one year appointment, with an opportunity for renewal. 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Student outreach and service learning outreach for the Labor Studies Minor and promotion of education about labor within University and wider community
  • Development and implementation of comprehensive Communication/Social Media/program promotion plan
  • Responsible for administering and promoting non-credit courses, conferences, and workshops for the UMass Lowell, Merrimack Valley and North Shore community
  • Conduct research on issues related to work and working people
  • Administrative Duties to build and maintain the program
  • Participation in and collaboration with the statewide Labor Extension Program of the University of Massachusetts (LEP)

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Three years related experience
  • Experience designing and coordinating educational programs for trade unionists
  • Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural, organizational, and communication skills
  • Computer proficiency, especially in word processing and database programs, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
  • Experience with social media communication
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Cultural sensitivity to persons of all backgrounds and nationalities

  • Strong commitment to diversity and the labor movement
  • Flexibility in work hours to include evenings and weekends in order to successfully accomplish objectives and satisfy goals
  • Must be willing to travel (will be required to use own automobile, mileage paid)
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A second language, Portuguese or Spanish is preferred
  • Demonstrated (over three years) experience teaching adults in union or community based setting and designing programs around workers and/or labor issues
