Facilities Management is seeking a full-time Recycling Collections personnel. This position is located in the Recycling collections unit in the Department of Facilities Management. The position collects all types of recyclable material and waste from the entire campus using a specified route. The position works on a crew with two other employees, and operates a ¾ ton box van. The position also sets up drop off sites, maintains and cleans recycling equipment, maintains facility, performs special pick-ups, and maintains records of the gathered material.

No previous education or experience is required. We are looking for someone with strong communication skills who can perform heavy physical work, including lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly, and pushing/pulling loads exceeding 100lbs.

This position offers excellent benefits, including medical and dental insurance, paid sick time and holidays, retirement, and flex schedules. This is a full-time position working 4, 10-hour shifts starting at 5:30 AM, Tuesday-Friday.

Who we are:

Facilities Management is responsible for the overall physical development, maintenance and operation of the campus. The recycling department collects over 700 tons of recyclables per year from the academic and research buildings on the CU-Boulder campus. Currently, the campus diversion rate is approximately 42% (the amount of waste that is diverted from the landfill and is either reused, recycled, or composted). Our goal is to reach a 90% diversion rate by the year 2020.

What your key responsibilities will be:

The Recycling Collections position will perform the following duties:
  • Set up central collection sites in the buildings with clean containers, proper stickers, and correct gradesheets.
  • Load, deliver, and unload recyclables from designated sites on campus and university building to ensure recyclables are collected and recycled.
  • Perform skilled work using light and heavy equipment and vehicles such as dollies, pallet jacks, forklifts, ¾ ton trucks, and rear-end load trucks to provide recycling and solid waste services
  • Inform supervisor of proposed or requested changes to collection sites (eg: room numbers, type of material)
  • Provide back-up service for special pick-ups and deliveries of recycling and solid waste items on and off campus.
  • Maintain route records by recording amounts of all recyclable collected, simple fuel, travel and mileage records.
  • Maintain, clean, perform minor inspections, check fluid levels, and lubricate equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintain and clean enclosures, cabinets, and central collection sites.

What you should know:
  • Within the first 30 days, the employee must pass a Commercial Motor Vehicle test conducted by the University's Transportation Services Department. The CMV certification is required to operate the ¾ ton truck, but is not a pre-requisite for the position.
  • This is an essential services position. The incumbent is required to respond after hours during emergencies and report to work for regular assigned shift during emergency campus closures.
  • Position may require weekend and shift work.
  • This position requires a valid Colorado driver's license and the incumbent should already have or be able to acquire and maintain a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) certification, based on the federal regulations found here:

What we'd like you to have:

  • At least two years of experience operating ¾-1 ton vehicles and be able to operate minor hydraulic equipment (lift gates, pallet jack, recycling/trash compactors).
