Posting Summary:
The University of Virginia Police Department is looking to fill the position of Security Corporal to provide personal, equipment, and property security in assigned areas across Grounds and the Hospital. Duties include unlocking and checking buildings and observing and reporting suspicious activity to appropriate parties. The Security Corporal is also responsible for supervising employees in the absence of the Security Sergeant. These are non-sworn civilian positions with no arrest powers.

Incumbents in this position must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time, have a positive driving record with the ability to drive security vehicles and be able to work day, evening and night shifts.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to appropriately apply safety principles and evaluate situations and routinely make appropriate decisions under varying and often rapidly evolving situations.

Possess strong oral and written communications, including writing accurate reports, testifying in court as needed and interacting with the community.

Demonstrate exemplary customer service through responsive, approachable, and courteous engagement with the community.

Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions and procedures.

Ability to use equipment required in the conduct of duty.

Maintain a valid VA driver's license with a positive point balance and ability to drive security vehicles.

Ability to work a flexible schedule including mandatory overtime as a result of unforeseen circumstances and coverage requirements.

Ability to meet all physical requirements in all working conditions including walking and standing for extended periods of time, driving, lifting, etc. and successfully complete all pre-employment testing.

Ability to train officers in all aspects of their jobs and the department.

Ability to lead by example and mentor team members.

Strong sense of teamwork to facilitate operations between Security Officers, Supervisors, and other members of the University Police Department.
