Library Assistant I (Serials/Interlibrary Loan)
Schedule Information: Monday-Friday: 8:00am-4:30pm

Work Conditions: Work is primarily indoor and sedentary in nature.
General Function: Maintains periodicals and continuations including recording, distribution, shelving and claiming missing issues. Processes interlibrary loan requests.
Using OCLC, Library automation system, and electronic resource manager (ERM), maintains, records, and processes periodicals and continuations in all formats as they arrive in the Library. Places on shelves or otherwise distributes periodicals, newspapers and continuations. Labels all periodicals. Resolves publisher embargo and URL issues. Notifies cataloging staff of changes in periodicals.
Prepares and updates the periodicals list.
Determines when periodicals and continuations are late or missing. Communicates with vendor or publisher to claim missing issues or to correct expiration dates.
Keeps the labels of periodical titles current on the periodical shelves and notifies cataloging department of changes. Keeps browsing shelves up-to-date.
Maintains records of all missing, mutilated and donated issues.
Using cooperative databases such as I-Share, Ariel, and OCLC, verifies, interprets, and corrects as needed bibliographic information concerning interlibrary loan requests. Examines requests for possible copyright violations and notifies supervisor of any problems.
Searches for bibliographic records to expedite patron requests using appropriate databases.
Maintains records of all interlibrary loan transactions and compiles statistics.
Processes requests for materials such as articles in journals and periodicals.
Provides information to patrons concerning interlibrary loan procedures, notifies them of items received, and ensures their return.
Processes actual material received or sent in appropriate formats using appropriate physical or electronic systems. Places incoming materials on reserve and notifies patrons. Mails outgoing materials to requestors.
Checks out Harper College materials to other institutions—both within its consortial memberships and as part of its participation in OCLC—and places holds on scheduled out materials.
Receives and records interlibrary loan billing payments. Resolves billing problems as needed.
Renews materials, notifies patron of overdue items or late fees owed, and places holds on patron records if materials are not returned. Notifies Acquisitions of lost materials to be withdrawn and/or re-ordered.
Assists in collection development and recommends frequently requested titles for addition to the collection.
Recommends new interlibrary loan procedures as needed.
Assists with library marketing initiatives, including helping to create displays.
Assists with library programming and events.
Aids Circulation Department, when necessary.
Assists with general Technical Services Department processes, when necessary.
Provides assistance to students, faculty and librarians as needed.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Educational Requirements: High school graduate or equivalent. 15 semester hours of college library science preferred.
Experience Requirements: At least one year of library experience with direct experience using a library database system. Familiarity with OCLC preferred.
