Position Summary

Facilities Design & Construction (FDC), manages improvement projects through the design and construction phases for the University. It's mission is to minimize financial risk and achieve the best possible results within the budget and time frame required for the benefit of the entire campus community. The department builds consensus and educates faculty, staff, students, designers and contractors in order to achieve the highest quality product possible. Facilities is very focused on employee engagement. The University is a sustainable campus with 8 buildings that are LEED Certified. UNCG has been granted Millennial Campus designation- Health and Wellness & Visual and Performing Arts. These two districts create opportunities for growth, development of innovative academic experiences, and the creation of unique public-private partnerships for the University. FDC is helping to build and sustain the community, as committed in the educational mission of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

FDC is seeking to hire a Project Architect with primary functions and responsibilities to provide overall planning, design and assist CM with design issues of both new and renovation capital improvement projects. Through assessment of existing facilities and direction from senior administrative officers, manage the budgeting, design and assist in construction of these projects. Assure that the University obtains what is needed, is of the quality desired, and that projects are designed within the determined time frame and budget. This position manages the programming and design portions of informal and capital projects and manages and coordinates the design process with the end users and the designers. Projects will range from $30,000 to $60 million dollars.

Primary duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide design solutions to resolve campus
    renovation that are not led by an outside
  • Provide the campus with NC State Building Code
  • Provide input for meeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental
    Design criteria (LEED)
  • Provide oversight and management of the design
    process that has significant budgetary, economic,
    organizational and community impact
  • Provide guidance in material & color selection to maintain University campus fabric
  • Provide input for development of project
    descriptions, budget and schedule for University
    Capital plans
  • Provide leadership with community and City of
    Greensboro engagement as the campus expands into
    adjoining neighborhood
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years experience in higher education
  • Project Management experience with the NC State Construction Office
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Alternate Option: Candidates with a current NCARB certification and the ability to obtain a license to practice architecture by the North Carolina Board of Architecture may be considered. License will need to be obtained before employment can start.

Extensive knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, community perceptions, standards, fiscal policies, and the overall objectives of the agency or university.

Project Design, Development, Planning and Analysis (Advanced)
Ability to provide building or renovation design solutions, and can provide guidance and direction to consulting design professionals and contractors for medium to large scale projects; ability to provide guidance to agency/university officials in the long-term development of structures to meet specialized needs. Ability to assess the programmatic needs of the user groups and make recommendations for new large-scale projects. May require ability to generate project design and documentation for projects designed by consultant design professionals.

Administration and Management (Advanced)
Ability to actively manage and coordinate multiple, varied, and/or large scale new construction, renovation, repair, and rehabilitation projects. Ability to handle significant fiscal responsibilities associated with projects/programs.

Communication (Advanced)
Ability to communicate with a broad range of agency/ university officials and delegating bodies. Ability to advise and provide oversight for large-scale projects; Ability to communicate long-term objectives to the university, agency, or governing bodies. Ability to present to advisory committees or other large groups. Ability to revise internal policy and procedures. May require ability to make recommendations to the state level.
