Working Title: Director of the International Human Rights Clinic

Position Type: Teaching and Research Faculty

Department: School of Law

Location: Charlottesville

Posting Date: 08-08-2017

Posting Summary:
The University of Virginia School of Law seeks a Director for its International Human Rights Clinic to begin work in the fall semester of 2018.

The purpose of the clinic is to give students direct experience in human rights advocacy, working in partnership with nongovernmental organizations, human rights practitioners, and law firms in the United States and abroad. The clinic enables students to develop practical skills, including international human rights research and writing, litigating human rights claims in international forums, advocating before the U.S. government and international organizations, and documenting and publicizing human rights violations.

The Director is responsible for managing both the classroom and practice components of the clinic. The Director will select clinic projects that allow students to build the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective human rights advocates, while exploring the opportunities and limitations of human rights institutions and the diversity of practice. The clinic will teach students fundamental human rights law concepts, the ethical and professional dilemmas that may arise in human rights lawyering, critical perspectives on human rights movements and campaigns, and the design of integrated advocacy strategies.

(For more information about the current clinic offering, see http://content.law.virginia.edu/academics/clinic/international-human-rights-clinic.)

The Director is responsible for establishing the curriculum for the classroom component of the clinic, for securing appropriate client engagements to be handled by the clinic, for supervising the clinic students' work on those client matters and for evaluating that student work. All of these duties of the Director will be performed within the broader and evolving experiential learning program at the Law School, in coordination with the Dean, Vice-Dean and Director of Clinics.

J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or foreign equivalent degree required. Substantial professional experience in the field of international human rights law required. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
