The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in the area of experimental particle physics on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The CMS group is led by Professors Cox, Hirosky and Neu and has a history of involvement in several physics research areas, including the search for the Higgs boson, Standard Model (SM) measurements of top-quark production and quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and searches for supersymmetry (SUSY) and other exotic forms of matter. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to data analysis, maintenance and operation of the current CMS experiment and development of the CMS upgrade. Specifically, the successful candidate will play a leading role in studying Higgs boson production at the LHC, in particular through the detailed observation of the Higgs produced in association with top quarks. In addition, the group has had a significant role in the maintenance and operation of the electromagnetic calorimeter at CMS, and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to these efforts. Finally, the successful candidate will also make important contributions to the upgrade of the CMS experiment for the High-Luminosity LHC era, including contributions to research and development for utilizing precision timing measurements in event reconstruction, and in the design, construction and installation of such a timing detector.
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics by the appointment start date. Candidates must also be willing and able to spend a portion of their appointment in residence at CERN located in Geneva, Switzerland. Priority will be given to candidates with a proven track record of excellence in LHC physics research, including both significant data analysis and/or hardware experience. This is initially a one-year appointment; however, the appointment may be renewed for additional one-year terms, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
