Posting Summary:
The University of Virginia (UVA) Library seeks a Cloud Architect & Lead Software Engineer. This position will be responsible for designing a cloud strategy for library collections and scholarly content and will work with a team of engineers to implement and operationalize that strategy. Demonstrated experience in working with cloud technologies, designing and developing software, and a solid knowledge of development operation practices are essential. This position reports to the Library CTO/Senior Director for IT and will work closely with a team of IT engineering staff, with the potential to supervise other engineers. The position will work closely with the CTO and library colleagues on emerging technology solutions and strategic priorities. UVa is a research-intensive institution (Carnegie classification R1) and the UVa Library has an established reputation for collaborating with peer institutions to produce innovative preservation and access solutions for libraries, archives and museums internationally. This position will participate in national/international projects as appropriate.
Qualifications, Required:
Bachelor's degree in a computer-related field; extensive related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience in cloud technologies as well as software design and development experience. Applicants must be able to conceptualize a problem and develop technology requirements, to define and develop application programing interfaces, to deploy and manage cloud based applications, and to design and develop software in a cloud environment. The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to a wide audience is essential. Applicants must be proficient in the Unix Operating System.
Preferred:
An advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, MIS, Library Science or related discipline. Experience developing digital asset management software for a research library or national archive, or development experience with linked data, common application frameworks, web server applications, or database technology. Knowledge of library and archives open source technologies, indexing and repository technologies, object oriented design, digital object formats and library metadata standards are preferred. Proficiency in OpenStack, Hydra, SOLR, Fedora, Blacklight, Rubymine, Github, etc. will be beneficial. Demonstrated management experience is a plus.
