Posting Date: 11-15-2016

Posting Summary:
The University of Virginia and the School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks candidates to support multiple research initiatives in Professor Calhoun's research group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering toward developing a unified theory and design/operation methodology for building dependable self-powered devices for the variety of application needs in the upcoming IoT. These initiatives include the $18M NSF Engineering Research Center called ASSIST (, the multi-million dollar Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) center called the Link Lab (, and a multi-million dollar research portfolio in self powered system design. These efforts seek to develop the theory, engineering principles, new components, and proof of concept prototype platforms for dependable self-powered, energy harvesting wireless systems for the IoT. The theory and engineering approach that the program develops will support both the interoperability and wide ranging energy requirements of a massively distributed network of heterogeneous, embedded, self-powered wireless systems.

Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of this work, qualified candidates can come from different areas and backgrounds. Candidates ideally will have expertise in VLSI design and sensor node hardware and software. Candidates may have experience with IC design, PCB design, CAD Tools (Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor), MCU Programming, circuit test, embedded systems, and programming, with preference for experience working in self powered sensors or energy harvesting sensors. Qualified candidates may also have experience in software, modeling, wireless sensor networks, and embedded computing.

Given the educational setting, the applicants will need to be able to work with and train students on the use of equipment and other research practices and to work with other staff. The position will include the opportunity to co-direct multiple funded PhD candidates working on related projects and to organize and maintain research efforts performed by undergraduate researchers. There is significant opportunity to publish research results in peer reviewed venues.

Sponsor limitations require that the candidate be a US citizen.
The candidate must have a PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or another field related to IoT research at the time of hire. The person filling this position would be responsible for overseeing multiple research design and laboratory duties in an IC and system design group including IC design, IC test, PCB design, embedded system design, software design, and prototype development.
