Working Title: Research Associate
Position Type: Professional Research Staff
Department: Department of Chemistry
Posting Date: 09-28-2017
The University of Virginia, Department of Chemistry, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the group of Professor Brent Gunnoe. The research is supported through MAXNET Energy, which is new research consortium that is comprised of representatives from eight Max Planck Institutes, Cardiff University and the University of Virginia. The anticipated start date of the position is December 1, 2017, although there is some flexibility.
The completion of a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field is required by the start date of the appointment. The incumbent must have experience in inorganic or organometallic chemistry. Expertise in the development and study of homogeneous catalysts, including experience with multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy, kinetics, and other tools of mechanistic study, and experience in electrocatalysis is preferred. The project requires strong organizational, communication and leadership skills as collaboration with groups outside the University of Virginia is an integral part of the projects. The incumbent must have effective oral and written communication skills. Also, the incumbent is expected to play a leadership role in the laboratory as a mentor for both graduate and undergraduate students.
This is a one-year appointment; however appointments may be renewed for an additional two, one-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
MAXNET Energy (https://maxnetenergy.cec.mpg.de/?site=mne) provides a partnership to foster collaborative research for new catalysts for energy processes. A primary focus of MAXNET Energy is on catalytic oxidation reactions, including water oxidation and light alkane oxidation (natural gas). The individual in this position will work on the development of catalysts for the activation and oxidation of hydrocarbons with a focus on light alkanes as well as the possibility of new catalysts for electrocatalytic water oxidation. One thrust will be to design new catalyst materials for direct methane fuel cells. The professional development opportunities that result from participation in the MAXNET Energy consortium are an attractive highlight of this position and include participation in MAXNET Energy meetings (generally held in Germany) and the possibility of travel to Max Planck Institutes for collaborative research.
The research projects are highly collaborative and will require working with chemical engineering and materials science research groups. The planned projects will build new collaborations with teams from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and the Fritz Haber Institute.
To apply candidates must submit a Candidate Profile through Jobs@UVA (https://jobs.virginia.edu), search on posting number 0621736, and electronically attach the following: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for 3 references.
