The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia seeks highly qualified applicants for a tenured faculty member in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education in the area of Reading Education. Rank is dependent upon qualifications. Incumbent is expected to design and conduct rigorous and programmatic research, to work with interdisciplinary faculty across the school and the University, and to be successful in obtaining extramural research funding. The faculty member collaborates with program and department faculty developing and implementing reading programs and designing and delivering doctoral preparation. Other duties include mentoring doctoral students' research and dissertation activities; advising undergraduate and graduate students on courses of study; and supervising graduate students' practica and related learning activities.
A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Reading or a related field is required. Ability and interest in working collaboratively with colleagues and organizations are essential. Demonstrated excellence in programmatic research, including a record of active and sustained publication in top-tier peer-reviewed journals is essential. Preference will be given to candidates who have secured and maintained extramural funding through competitive application procedures. A record of outstanding teaching at the post-secondary level is required including experience working with in-service teachers. At least three years of classroom experience teaching at the K-12 level is preferred. Knowledge of literacy development and comprehensive reading instruction K-12 is required. Knowledge of reading in the content areas (e.g. STEM, Social Studies) is preferred. Knowledge of children's texts, children's literature (fiction and non-fiction), text-reader matching issues, readability, phonics and word study, response to intervention, and formative assessment is also preferred. Experience working with schools and school districts developing and implementing reading curricula is preferred. Eligibility for licensure as a teacher in Virginia or another state is also preferred.
