Posting Summary:
The Department of Medical Education at the University of Virginia seeks non-physicians for its Clinical Performance Development (CPD) Phase 1 program to serve as co-mentors, starting immediately for four hours one day per week. The CPD program a course designed to teach pre-clerkship students clinical reasoning using case-based discussions as well as skills, such as history-taking, physical examination and procedures.

Non-Physician Co-Mentors are responsible for working with the Physician mentor in preparing and organizing for small group sessions, facilitating small group discussion by way of case-related and skill-related activities, attending to general group functioning and evaluating student performance.

To be considered for the Non-Physician Co-Mentor position, candidates must possess the appropriate degree or credentials that would be expected of a salaried faculty member. Involvement during the first two semesters (1A and 1B) will be four hours weekly totaling approximately fifteen to seventeen sessions per semester. Non-Physician Co-Mentors must commit to teaching and mentoring students through May 2018, as students learn to interact with patients, take medical histories, and perform basic physical examination maneuvers. An important responsibility of the Co-mentor is to role-play the patient in case based learning scenarios. Other responsibilities include providing the following: a patient and lay-person perspective, an advisory role in students' development of clinical skills, the perspective of an allied health professional, and instructive and constructive feedback to students and mentor colleagues. Non-Physician Co-Mentors must assume a substantial role as a student mentor, confidant, and facilitator of small group discussions.
