Occupational Summary
Manage & lead all aspects of outreach & screening programs, & corresponding research portfolios within the Duke Cancer Institute's (DCI) for the Office of Health Equity. Perform &/or oversee a variety of complex duties involved in the collection, compilation, documentation & analysis of outreach, screening, & research programs; assist with content & direction of research program or portfolio; assist with efforts to obtain & manage study or program funding. Frequently interact with other research groups, community partners, & stakeholders, serving as primary liaison & public relations lead to research & service programs. Coordinate wider program activities such as the Community Screening Navigation Program, Men's Health Initiative, & other community based screening programs with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, & reporting requirements. Support research pipeline programs & manage internship program.

The Research Project Lead will oversee study implementation and management of outreach/screening/research staff (Community Screening Navigators). Lead weekly or biweekly team meetings for key research projects & programs, represent the programs & research portfolio to internal & external collaborators, & be responsible for regular reporting (NIH, IRB, etc.).

Description of Portfolio and Responsibilities
Daily Operations - The DCI, Community Screening Navigation program is both a service and a research platform to improve population health. It is a key component of the DCI Longitudinal Navigation Program linked directly to treatment and survivorship navigation. Work with a team to screen participants for minimal risk studies such as cancer screenings programs (1.e., Men's Health Initiative, Women's Health Awareness Day, follow-up on "no-show" screenings), community assessments, behavioral studies and health services research and interventions. Manage and lead all aspects of the large community based screening programs and partnerships, such as the Men's Health Initiative and the Women's Health Awareness Day. Work collaboratively with local clinics and partners to increase cancer screening in the region.

Maintain participant level documentation for minimal risk studies, or for other studies under direction. Serve as a unit/departmental resource and train others regarding preparation and follow-up of screening navigation, community based screening programs, and other programs and research study protocols. Responsible for the creation of SOPs, and implementation of operational plans for studies, projects, and programs. Collaborate with team to maintain appropriate study-level documentation including regulatory binders, enrollment logs, patient registration in the system of record, evaluation and outcomes metrics etc. Employ strategies to assist participants with individual needs to eliminate barriers to cancer screening. Ensure recruitment and retention goals are met based on study objectives.

Conduct and document consent for participants in minimal risk studies. Provide input, manage, and submit DUHS IRB documents such as consent forms, protocols, and continuing reviews, and risk management forms and applications for cancer screening programs.

Ethics - Communicate to research participants, both orally and written, the difference between clinical activities and research activities in all study documents and research participant communications. Assist with the development of Conflict of Interest (COI)/Data Safety Monitoring Plans (DSMPs)/Research Data Security Plans (RDSPs). Identify and explain the risk and benefits to research participation to potential candidates and the broader community.

Data - Predict areas of vulnerability for data flow for multiple studies in OHED. Collaborate to design data flow plans that include elements related to data capture, storage, management, quality, and preparation for analysis. Identify, discuss, and implement methods of data capture in the community and discuss advantages and disadvantages of each. Ensure SOPs for all projects are updated regularly, and followed by study teams. Recognize trends and areas for improvement in programs and projects and make recommendations to the director as appropriate. Oversee implementation of contracts and agreements based on OHED's SOPS .

Science - Conduct and synthesize literature reviews independently Collaborate with various stakeholders (community, patients, community health leaders, statistical, operational, etc.) to ensure adequate design, implementation and testing of current and future program and research study aims. Assist with development of research proposals or protocols. Summarize and interpret study results, and determine application to future studies and/or programs.

Leadership - Provide significant contribution and influence upon research work, activities, or productivity of project teams or across multiple groups. Successfully lead several committees and task force using the Principles of Community Engagement to carry out the program and research goals of OHED. Independently lead scientific or programmatic presentations or publications. Maintain Duke and project specific training requirements. Ensure cultural diversity and cultural competency in the design and conduct of community screening programs, community engagement and research.

Study and Site Management - Make recommendations to investigators and oversight organization regarding appropriate feasibility, recruitment, and retention strategies. Ensure participant and community partner expenses have appropriate financial routing in a timely manner. Coordinate with financial teams, PRMO, etc. and to ensure appropriate management of patient screening costs. Assist with study budgets. Use system reports to ensure unit, division, or department compliance with institutional requirement/policies; assist team members with understanding these requirements and policies. Develop project--specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, standard operating procedures, and case report forms.

Communication - Take action when communication has stalled with internal and or external partners. Recognize when others need to be brought into the conversation and escalate appropriately.

Supervisory - Provide oversight of two Community Screening Navigators and their research, outreach, screening activities and programs.

Education

Additionally, the RPL must have an incredible attention to detail, be a creative problem solver, and possess strong communication skills to facilitate effective interactions with a wide range of stakeholders.

The preferred candidate will have community health, public/population health, and research experience, training, and education.
