Job Description

The Product Safety Engineer will create solutions that reduce or eliminate safety issues associated with products. They participate in the design process for new products in order to prevent injuries, damage to the environment, or to property. If necessary, they investigate the causes of product failures that resulted in, or had the potential to result in, injuries or damage. They also interface with global regulatory agencies regarding any safety concerns.

Primary responsibilities
  • Continue to drive a culture of product safety
  • Teach best practices regarding product safety
  • Investigate root cause of safety related product failures
  • Coordinate product recalls if necessary
  • Engage in new product design process
  • Develop/conduct research and tests to evaluate product safety
  • Actively participate in engineering gate reviews evaluating products for safety
  • Construct and review precautionary instructions on labels
  • Review CAD Models and drawings as well as inspect prototypes to anticipate, recognize, and evaluate safety hazards
  • Utilize tools such as preliminary hazard analysis, DFMEA, FMEDA, qualitative and quantitative fault tree analysis
  • Achieve safety compliance across multiple product lines and programs
  • Maintain proficiency of worldwide safety regulations through research, development of network, and ongoing education
  • Collaborate with project managers, development teams, and customers on functional safety
  • Conduct/coordinate continuous product safety improvement projects

Qualifications for this position include
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering plus a minimum of 7 years of progressive safety/compliance/quality experience in product development/sustaining engineering for a manufacturing company in a regulated industry
  • Requires knowledge of:
    • Product Safety Laws and Consensus Standards
    • Product Liability, Warranties, Litigation, and Insurance
    • Enforcement Actions of CPSC and other relevant agencies
    • Use of Human Factors assessments
    • Statistical methods used in safety engineering
    • Risk Assessments
  • Must have experience with:
    • Product safety auditing experience
    • Incident and root cause investigation
    • Government rule/regulation interpretation and reporting
    • Safety related product recalls
    • Liability insurance and litigation
  • Demonstrated ability to use state of the art techniques to perform early assessment and prediction of reliability, safety and quality levels of designs in systems with critical functional applications
