The Chief Communications Officer is responsible for strategizing, directing, designing, and implementing effective marketing, media relations, content, and identity programs and campaigns across diverse media that convey a strong identity with broad visibility. Major areas of responsibility include social media, digital/email marketing, reputation and issues management, crisis communications, content production and management, graphic design, and project and budget management.

Primary duties include: ensuring successful promotion and marketing of all Museum exhibitions and programs with the goal of increasing the volume and diversity of physical and online audiences and supporters; overseeing a proactive and comprehensive program of media relations that generates press and publicity for the Museum and increases awareness of its unique niche and ambitious goals; developing, shaping, and leading decisions about print and digital content consistent with institutional mission and excellence to further the Museum's position as a cultural leader; conceptualizing and executing the presentation of the Museum and its public image and identity as a dynamic cultural institution through design and branding in print, digital, and signage media; and overseeing department staff, operations, and finances.

Required:

  • Minimum of five years' experience at a senior level in communications or public relations in a museum, cultural institution, or related organization.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing complex marketing and public relations campaigns; experience overseeing website technologies and major social media initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience at prioritizing responsibilities and managing time for members of a creative and design team, development team, and tracking details of multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written & oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to develop, adapt, and manage long-term plans and strategies based on institutional needs and priorities, changing trends and circumstances, anticipated outcomes and issues, and available resources.
  • Working knowledge of art and art history; working knowledge of the contemporary art world including gallerists, artists, journalists, and critics.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate innovative communications strategies to address specific internal or external issues; high level of social media expertise; high-level understanding of current and emerging technologies, as well as a sophisticated and nuanced view of cultural and technological trends.
  • Superior writing and editing skills; demonstrated ability to write and edit effective news releases, media advisories, pitch letters, fact sheets, calendar announcements, press preview invitations, public service announcements, and advertising and banner copy; demonstrated ability to write and edit publications.
  • Excellent project management skills, including identifying project scope, assessing risks, scheduling, planning, anticipating issues, identifying solutions, ensuring that all projects are completed as scheduled, evaluating projects and user experiences, and overseeing projects delegated to others.
  • Solid budget management experience, including creating and developing budgets, tracking expenses and revenue, forecasting results, assessing budget impact of institutional needs, adapting budgets to changing priorities, and achieving institutional and department goals within budget.
  • Ability to effectively lead and mentor staff to ensure high levels of productivity and motivation, as well as a positive working environment.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend events to assist with media coverage as necessary.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, writing, art history, humanities, or related field or equivalent work related experience.
