Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree preferred in business, accounting, or related field.



Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

A year or more financial or accounting experience is required. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the principles and practices of governmental accounting, including federal grants and GAAP, ideally in higher education accounting, is preferred.

Preferred skills:
Knowledge of developing budgets, including research budgets.
Knowledge of administrative systems at UW-Madison preferred. (WISDM, WISPER, HRS/JEMS).
In depth knowledge of State, UW and various funding agency rules and regulations regarding financial transactions.
Expertise in using Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Strong skills in office practices and procedures for record keeping, data collection/retrieval and work planning.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision; exercise initiative and motivation, independent decision-making skills, and good judgment.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with faculty and staff. Ability to maintain good working relationships with Chair, Principal Investigators, faculty, administrator, staff, campus and division accounting services personnel, vendors, and donors.
Ability to problem-solve and participate in making fiscal decisions.
Ability to work with process stakeholders to create/develop, test, and apply innovative ideas and technology to various situations.
Ability to analyze financial data and make recommendations on expenditures for gifts and grants.

The position requires the understanding, application and monitoring of numerous, and sometimes conflicting, policies and procedures.



Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Department Manager and serving as a team lead for financial management, this position will provide fiscal management services for the Department of Computer Sciences. The position will be the primary lead responsible for fiscal management of University of Wisconsin Foundation (UWF) accounts and the related Department gift accounts, Department accounts, and Industry Fellowship and Scholarship accounts. This position will also provide direction on purchase orders and requisitions, and purchasing card oversight. The incumbent will also serve as back-up to the pre-award research administrator regarding pre-award activities in the department.
