Job Description Summary:

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking an Assistant Director of Development for George Washington University Family Philanthropy, which advances the attainment for every school and unit across the university through gifts from family members of GW students. DAR is responsible for leading the university's alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWUs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care. Reporting to the Executive Director, Family Philanthropy, the Assistant Director of Development will create and implement fundraising strategies in support of this mission.

The Family Philanthropy program is designed to build strong relationships between family members of GW students and the university, facilitating upwards of $8M to $10M annually in support of the attainment goals of schools and units across campus. This position will collaborate with colleagues across the university to promote funding opportunities to families. This is accomplished through one-on-one engagement with a portfolio of approximately 150 family prospects, resulting in prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

The Assistant Director of Development will secure gifts ranging from $25,000 to $1,000,000+ from major and principal level prospects in an assigned region with diverse interests and class year classifications, working with urgency and independence. This team member will serve as an honest broker of donor interests and fundraising opportunities for a variety of areas across campus and model a collaborative approach to fundraising at all times. Travel is required to meet with prospects and donors in an assigned geographic region (determined based on each year's freshman enrollment) to cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts to all parts of the university and to grow diverse donor participation on GW's Family Philanthropy Board, focusing primarily on parents of current undergraduates.

This position is also responsible for building and maintaining relationships with appropriate faculty and staff across the university to understand and effectively communicate university-wide funding priorities. The ideal candidate will operates with independence and initiative while collaborating with team members to share best practices. This role will be required to maintain proper documentation of fundraising activities in the database (Advance) including strategies, correspondence, visits, proposals, and solicitations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 1 year of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

Willingness to make cold calls with donor prospects.

Previous higher education fundraising experience including major gift fundraising desired.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of parent and alumni giving.

Demonstrated ability to speak and write persuasively about higher education.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective communication with high level internal and external audiences.

Excellent time management skills with the ability to plan and implement multiple priorities simultaneously while managing disparate personalities.
