Job Description Summary:
Biomedical engineering education and research is an important mission of the GW School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Faculty and students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) work together to explore solutions to a number of pressing challenges, such as improving cancer detection rates, developing medical diagnostic devices for timelier, personalized healthcare and improving surgical outcomes.
Reporting to a Principal Investigator, the Postdoctoral Scientist will design and automate optical imaging and optical stimulation systems for in vitro and in vivo cardiac optogenetics.
Our experimental models involve human iPS-CMs and an adult rat model for optical control of cardiac electromechanical activity.
The Postdoctoral Scientist is expected to design and conduct experiments, analyze data, prepare and submit manuscripts for publication.
Lab management duties will include co-mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.

PhD in Optics, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or Computer Engineering (with basic biology background) or related discipline.
An ideal candidate should have strong quantitative skills and adequate knowledge of either biomedical optics/optical imaging/optogenetics and/or molecular biology/optogenetics.
In addition, they are expected to have strong background in at least one of the following:
molecular biology techniques, plasmids, viral vectors, gene delivery; optical imaging/control/electronics; cardiac tissue engineering; patch clamp; computer programming/physics/mathematical modeling.
It is essential that the candidates possess natural aptitude for problem solving, is highly motivated and willing to learn new skills.
Evidence for good writing skills and publication record during the Ph.D. studies is a plus.
Our group offers unique training at cutting-edge technology and interdisciplinary research in optical imaging and optical control at different scales (from cellular to whole heart to intact animal).
