Program Director of Music Therapy
Job Summary/Basic Function
As we celebrate the retirement of Dr. Cynthia Briggs after 13 years of dedicated service, Maryville University is seeking an innovative leader to serve as the Program Director for the Music Therapy Program beginning June 1, 2018. In addition to providing leadership and management of the Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy and the Master of Music Therapy degree programs, the Director has oversight over several unique community programs. The Director is responsible for the management and reporting components of the program's accreditation through the National Association of Schools of Music and the program's approval through the American Music Therapy Association. Community partnerships include the St. Louis Symphony, the Alzheimer's Association, St. Louis ARC, the Parkinson's Association, the Albert J. Pujols Family Foundation, the Walker Scottish Rite Pediatric Speech Clinic and the Angel Band Project. Each of these partnerships provide music therapy services to the community and clinical opportunities for music therapy students.
Maryville University has provided music therapy education since 1972. The University is proud of its 45 year history of preparing music therapists and is highly supportive of the degree programs. There is a vibrant music therapy community in the St. Louis area, providing many opportunities for students to complete clinical practica and internships in the metropolitan area. With ongoing support from the University, the Kids Rock Cancer project was created in 2009 as a music therapy outreach to children with cancer or blood-related disorders. (kidsrockcancer.org).
Responsibilities of the Music Therapy Director Position:
• Supervision and collaboration with faculty
• Guide all program planning, coordination and evaluation
• Serve as a member of the College of Health Professions Directors Council and other University committees as assigned.
• Provide leadership in the recruitment and retention of students.
• Coordinate scheduling of classes and faculty assignments.
• Provide leadership in the selection, retention, promotion and development of faculty; hire, train and evaluate adjunct faculty.
• Manage the resources and facilities assigned to the program, including managing all budgets.
• Facilitate communication within the program, including serving as faculty and student advocate, as well as to external units. Facilitate communication with program alumni. Facilitate communication and cooperation with other programs in CHP and University.
• Manage admission, dismissal and graduation recommendations.
• Oversee routine and non-routine reporting required of the program, including maintaining on-going accreditation of the program
• Maintain a Program Advisory Committee drawn from the community
The successful candidate must be committed to fostering a culturally diverse atmosphere for faculty, staff and students.
• Extensive knowledge of the fields of music and music therapy.
• Earned doctorate in music therapy or related field from regionally accredited institution.
• Board Certification in Music Therapy
• Commitment to Teaching Excellence
• Passion for community based music therapy education
• Minimum 5 years clinical experience in music therapy
