Night Shift 4pm-4am - Entry Lab Technician (Foundry, Metals)
Position/Title: Night Shift - Laboratory Technician
(4pm-4am / Monday-Wednesday or Thursday-Saturday alternating Sundays)
(Training will be during the day shift Monday-Friday for the first 3 months)
Responsible To: Quality Manager / Laboratory Supervisor
Position Summary (purpose of the position):
The laboratory technician is responsible for the daily activity that involves analysis of a variety of elements associated with alloy manufacturing using:
- GFAA (Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption)
- ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) spectrometers
- OES (Optical Emission Spectrometer)
- XRF (X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer)
- Carbon/Sulfur and Oxygen/Nitrogen Analyzers
- Various laboratory preparatory instrumentation/techniques
The laboratory technician is expected to interact with Quality/Lab/Technical staff, EH&S staff, and production staff.
To accomplish this requires skills and knowledge in related areas which may include, but are not limited to the following: computer knowledge in order to use the instruments (including experience with spreadsheets) and college level chemistry/science courses to analyze the data and calculate the element additions.
The chemistry technician must be able to: follow instructions, be flexible with scheduling, adjust priorities, communicate well, be organized and plan each task in advance.
Routinely deal with multiple job tasks, communicating with laboratory and production staff in determining priorities. After priorities are determined, the laboratory technician will work independently with minimal supervision to complete assigned tasks and report completion to the laboratory supervisor and quality manager as necessary.
Essential Function/Major Responsibilities:
- Prepare solutions, samples and standards for GFAA and ICP analysis.
- Prepare chips from solid samples for GFAA and ICP analysis using the lathe.
- Prepare sample for XRF, OES, C/S and O/N analysis (polishing, grinding and cutting).
- Maintain inventory of standards and other consumable materials (check of quantity and expiration dates).
- Perform cleaning and routine and preventative maintenance of the laboratory preparatory and analytical instruments (as assigned by supervision).
- Calibrate and operate the GFAA or ICP units on raw materials (as applicable), prime/revert, and master heat samples.
- Review GFAA and ICP chemical analysis results data.
- Operate the XRF, OES, C/S and O/N analyzer for analysis of raw materials (as applicable), preliminary, and final certification samples.
- Calculate alloy corrective additions.
- Store and file samples in accordance with internal and customer record retention requirements.
- Assist in round robin events and generation of new analytical curves as assigned by supervisor.
- Observe all safety rules and regulations.
- Participate in and complete training as prescribed by immediate leadership and/or in compliance with corporate offices.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Work required with hazardous chemicals like acid solutions.
- Help to clean and maintain an organized work environment, including proper disposal and/or storage of hazardous waste materials.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Education, Experience, Physical Requirements and Knowledge:
- Associate degree (A.S.) in Chemistry or equivalent.
- Equivalence is a minimum of 5 years of experience operating ICPs and GFAAs, and completion of a least one college level chemistry class.
- Excellent communication skill written and verbally.
- Proficient with computers (word, excel, power point, lotus note).
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic in various units of measure, using Metric & English whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute ratio, percentage and parts per million (ppm).
- Ability to read and interpret documents, safety rules, instructions, operating, procedure and maintenance manuals. Write routine reports or correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels across the organization.
- Ability to work with people from different back grounds individually and in a team environment
- Required to stand and sit.
- Required dexterity and strength to manipulate samples and/or instrumentation during routine tasks.
- Frequently required to wear gloves and other industrial PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
- May be required to move heavy objects (25 lbs) and/or change gas cylinders.
