About the College/Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has 22 faculty members with current enrollment of approximately 575 undergraduates, many who participate in the University Honors College. The MS and PhD programs serve approximately 50 graduate students.

The College of Engineering consists of eight departments that offer BS degrees in nine disciplines, MS degrees in ten disciplines, and a PhD degree in Engineering with several concentrations. The undergraduate enrollment in the college currently stands at over 3,000 and the graduate enrollment stands at almost 900. The college has 103 tenured/tenure-track full-time faculty associated with it and generally has externally funded annual research expenditures of approximately $20M.

Summary of Job Duties

This position is a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor within the College of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

This position includes teaching, research, and service. This position will conduct research leading to scholarly publication, design graduate and undergraduate courses, provide curriculum material, construct syllabi, lead classroom instruction, write and administer exams, prepare and evaluate students, mentor students, serve on various faculty and student-oriented committees, exhibit participation and leadership in related professional societies and participate in the faculty decision-making for the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Areas of interests include traditional and emerging control systems, robotics, and autonomous systems. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated scholarly research and be able to collaborate with faculty members within one or more of the Department's existing or emerging areas of research strength. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core mechanical engineering classes in support of our undergraduate and graduate programs, establish an externally funded research program, and contribute to the departmental service needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a closely related field conferred by the start of employment
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in mechanical engineering

Preferred Qualifications
  • Research expertise that align with one of the Department and College's existing or emerging research strengths, for example in aerospace, sustainability, controls, mechanical design, manufacturing, or nanomaterials
  • Capable of conducting research using both experimental and computational approaches
