Description:

The Sign Language Interpreter provides sign language interpreting for students who are deaf, primarily in the classroom, and in college-wide activities as required. Additionally, the Sign Language Interpreter works in recruiting, screening, mentoring, and scheduling agencies and contracted self-employed interpreters to provide services to GGC students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide 20+ hours of sign language interpreting per week appropriate to students' mode of communication
  • Assess students' communication mode and provide sign language appropriate for each student for best access
  • Provide interpreting to current and potential students as needed for access outside of class
  • Interpret with assigned team member as appropriate
  • Provide interpreting services for college faculty and staff as needed and available once students have been assisted
  • Assist the Director of Disability Services with selecting, evaluate and mentor independent contracted interpreters for skill and other essential factors, including professionalism and ethical practices
  • Maintain working knowledge of national credential assessments and skill levels
  • Maintain awareness of area contract interpreters and their availability for work
  • Schedule interpreters for semester assignments, special events and as substitutes
  • Provide technical assistance for access needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Inform Coordinator of any access issues related to students who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Assist with coordination of accessible media for college-wide use and for specific instructional purposes
  • Collaborate with the Director of Disability Services in preparing and presenting programs for current and prospective students, family members, the community, high school personnel, GGC faculty/staff about postsecondary services to students who are deaf and hard of hearing
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and long hours per day, as needed. May be required to cross-train for another position and/or responsibility within the college in order to provide both back-up for a department as well as to supplement resources needed during certain times of the year. While these duties may differ from those typically assigned to this position, they shall not substantially exceed the level of duties for this position
  • Perform other duties as assigned





Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree from an accredited interpreter training program or nationally certified with 2+ years of experience in a post-secondary arena
  • Proficient in both signed English and ASL
  • A minimum of three (3) years of directly related job experience
  • Possess national interpreter certification through RID or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
  • Adherence to the RID Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Working knowledge of current and former interpreter credentials awarded through the RID
  • In-depth knowledge of the RID Code of Professional Standards and its application in the postsecondary setting

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work effectively, with minimal supervision, in a team-based environment with a diverse student body, faculty and staff
  • Computer skills necessary to conduct electronic business and communication
  • Working knowledge of disability compliance mandates as well as best practices for students who are deaf and hard of hearing
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and long hours per day, as needed
  • Ability to work well with a diverse student population
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others and be self-motivated
