Requisition Title: Associate / Full Professor - Chief, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics - 1701740

Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics (LMMD) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada, a fully affiliated academic Health Sciences facility of the University of Toronto. Effective start date of appointment is January 1, 2018, or a mutually agreeable date.

Sunnybrook has recently restructured its medical laboratories to create a single Department of Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics, with five Divisions (Anatomic Pathology, Hematological Pathology, Transfusion Medicine and Tissue Banking, Clinical Chemistry, and Microbiology). This restructuring reflects the importance of LMMD to achieving Sunnybrook's patient care, research and educational missions, and the new Chief position of laboratory medicine to have a stronger and more focused voice at the hospital's planning tables. The Chief, together with the Departmental Administrative Director, working as a management dyad, will report to the Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer at Sunnybrook.

We seek an outstanding academic individual with proven administrative experience and strong leadership skills who, as Chief, will continue to foster excellence in laboratory medicine while assuming a major role in leading the growth and development of education and research within the Department. Working with the Heads of the Divisions, the Chief will be responsible for clinical and academic matters within the Department; for providing institutional leadership on issues related to laboratory medicine and hospital strategy; and working with the Administrative Director of the Department, for ensuring effective and efficient Department operations. Opportunities to engage in clinical and/or academic activities are available. Candidates must hold an MD and have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent qualifications and should be eligible for an academic appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Equally important will be the vision to continue integration with Sunnybrook's Programs and strategic priorities as well as with our broader community; commitment to enhancing existing and building new partnerships with other institutions to support the development of integrated delivery systems, excellent interpersonal skills; strong leadership capabilities; experience and knowledge regarding the recruitment of academic physicians; a record of peer-reviewed research; leadership in undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, continuing medical education or patient education; and/or leadership in model service delivery as a creative professional academic activity; and the ability to lead the LMMD component of Sunnybrook's emerging strategy for Precision Medicine.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics is recognized for its excellence in patient care, research and education, with 30 medical and scientific staff, and 238 medical laboratory technologists, technicians, phlebotomists and pathology assistants. Together these dedicated staff and medical staff help support over one million patient visits annually at Sunnybrook

Sunnybrook is in the process of refreshing its Strategic Plan for 2018-21, and it is anticipated that Precision Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics will play a prominent role in the updated Plan. Sunnybrook is committed to high quality inter-professional education and is the home of one of the University's four Academies for undergraduate medical education in addition to providing postgraduate and fellowship training in virtually all disciplines. The Sunnybrook Research Institute is one of the fastest growing hospital-based research enterprises in Canada with well-established programs in basic and applied research, conducting $100 million in research each year, developing innovations in care for more than one million patients annually, and passionate about providing rewarding educational experiences for more than 2,000 students each year.

Estimated remuneration will be in the range of $350,000 - $450,000, and commensurate with academic rank, qualifications and experience.
