Fire Alarm Technician (Electronic Specialist II)

This full-time, state classified, Electronic Specialist II position operates, monitors, services, tests, and/or repairs fire alarm systems, plus associated hardware and components for all UCD campus buildings. Responds to emergency calls pertaining to fire alarm problems, and emergencies throughout the campus. Responds to fire department calls. Participates and assists in emergencies based on the magnitude and nature. Supports various special events both in preparation and during the event (i.e. Commencement).

*Examples of work performed:*

• Inspects/tests fire alarm systems in all UCD buildings for proper operation. Ensures that all systems are operative and monitoring equipment in the Fire Command Center is on line and ready to answer calls and relay to the fire department.

• Diagnoses cause of issues and implements electrical/electronic repairs, both scheduled and unscheduled, by determining the most logical approach and creates solutions to the repairs /replacement of fire alarm systems/components (Examples: smoke detectors, heat sensors, visual/audible alarms, fire suppression water pumps, pull stations, and others). Operates university vehicle to transport tools/equipment to different work sites across campus.

• Documents results from all testing, repairs, and alarms from the fire alarm system(s) installed at UCD. Enters responses by the Fire Department in the fire alarm log and records pertinent information on calls and troubles. Keeps accurate records of all testing activities.

• Evaluates and recommends repairs, replacement, and the installation of new devices in the system. Establishes a trend of failures and makes recommendations to prevent reoccurring problems in the fire alarm equipment.

• Reviews and recommends alterations for various product submittals, and for new installation, and reviews specifications, blueprint, schematics and diagrams.

• Stays involved with construction review of new and remodel projects to ensure the fire and life safety systems contained within ensure optimal functionality for the UCD research and education communities.

• Participates and assists in emergencies based on the magnitude and nature. Supports various special events both in preparation and during the event (i.e. Commencement).

• May be assigned other duties as required

Note: This is an essential services position. The incumbent is required to respond after hours during emergencies and report to work for regular assigned shifts during emergency campus closures.

Salary and Benefits:

Hiring Salary: $4558.00/ month (non-negotiable)*

*The salary offered is usually the minimum listed, however, a salary above the minimum may be offered for some hard to fill positions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of technical experience repairing, performing maintenance, installing, modifying, calibrating, certifying, or fabricating equipment and facilities related to fire alarm systems.

Substitution:
An associate's degree or successful completion of the equivalent of 60 semester hours of training at an accredited college or university or recognized non-correspondence technical school with 30 semester hours of course work related to electronic systems may be substituted for two years of the required experience (transcripts required).

Colorado law requires that candidates for state government jobs be residents of Colorado at the time of application.

• Must possess and maintain a NICET II certifications

• Must possess and maintain a current State of Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

• Must be willing and able to work in areas where you may be exposed to hazardous chemicals or infectious materials.
• Must be willing and able to operate moving equipment and work around machinery or moving equipment.
• Must be willing and able to work around noise/vibrations.
• Must be willing and able to work alone, above ground and in small confined spaces.
• Must be willing and able to walk on uneven surfaces and climb on scaffolds/ladders.
• Must be willing and able to work straight or rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.

NOTE: This position has been designated as essential personnel, "Subject to call 24 hours per day, seven days per week" and may be required to carry a pager. Position may also be required to "Stay over late" or "Come in early" to "Cover" shifts, as needed and may be required to respond to any emergencies as needed. If hired, you will be required to provide effective off-hours phone contact info for emergency call-in purposes.
