Job Description

The Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency (NMUTR) is designed to improve student achievement by coupling rigorous research-based teacher preparation with the concrete needs and realities of the Newark Public Schools. Cohorts of up to 25 teacher residents each participate in a full-time clinical apprenticeship with highly qualified, dedicated mentor teachers who are experienced in the residents' areas of certification (dual-certification in early childhood education and special education, mathematics education, or science education). Successful program completers will receive NJ teacher certification, a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, will be hired by NPS, and will receive induction support from the MUTR for a minimum of three years after they complete the residency.

The Induction Coordinator works directly with the NMUTR Director and the Principal Investigator to oversee and implement all aspects of the Induction Plan that has been designed specifically for residency programs like the NMUTR. The Induction Coordinator is responsible for oversight and administration of the Induction Plan including: working with residency graduates in their school setting; creating and developing a professional learning community among novice teachers, experienced mentor teachers and educational leaders; overseeing all aspects of the work of the Induction Coaches who are hired to support graduates; developing a calendar and timeline of Induction events and activities; and implementing all mentoring, coaching and school leader professional development. Additionally, the Coordinator will work to bring induction practices to graduates of other teacher education grant programs, as well as to the larger teacher preparation programs at Montclair State University.

The Induction Coordinator communicates continuously and works closely with Residency faculty and serves as a coordinator for all induction-related aspects of the NMUTR grant. This includes budget management, program management, and data collection with and for the NMUTR program evaluators. This person will serve on the NMUTR Core Planning Team in support of activities that are integral to the project plan.

This is a 12-month position.



Qualifications & Requirements

Successful candidates for this position must hold a Master's degree. Doctoral degree is preferred. A minimum of three to five years P- 12 and/or university teaching experience required. Candidate should have a record of strong administrative, management, and communication skills, including successful collaboration with university colleagues. Experience leading or implementing professional development programs in public school settings, knowledge of university culture and structure are sought. Knowledge about new teacher induction, mentoring, coaching, and supporting new teachers is necessary.

SKILLS:
Candidates must have highly developed interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills. Candidates must have a commitment to school/university partnership and have the ability to work well across different institutions, facilitate collaboration among partner s with different and sometimes competing interests, and the ability to solve difficult problems of practice in urban schools and teacher education. Candidates must also possess a clear understanding of the change process, how to lead and engage in change/renewal in schools and at the University, and how to support novice and experienced teachers and administrators in the process. Knowledge of budget management, knowledge of computer applications (e.g. Excel, data bases, Word, etc.) are also essential.



Salary Range
Commensurate with experience.
