Job Description

Postdoctoral Associate-1702759

Required Qualifications (As evidenced by an attached resume):

PhD in Astronomy/Astrophysics, Physics, Applied Math or related field in hand by June 30, 2018. Experience writing and running hydrodynamics simulation codes. C++ and Fortran programming.

Preferred Qualifications:

Understanding of low speed hydrodynamics approximations. Knowledge and experience with adaptive mesh refinement techniques. Experience with research in stellar evolution.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Stony Brook University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a postdoctoral position in computational stellar astrophysics. The postdoc will work with Profs. Michael Zingale and Alan Calder and will be expected to work on developing new formulations of low speed hydrodynamics algorithms incorporating rotation in the Maestro hydro code ( and applying this to massive star evolution. The postdoc will collaborate with colleagues at LBNL and other institutions in the TEAMS SciDAC project on core-collapse supernova work. Experience with hydrodynamics, low speed / projection methods, adaptive mesh refinement, stellar evolution, high-performance computing with C++ and Fortran, and a commitment to open science are desired.

The position is for 2 years with the possibility of an extension. The initial pay rate is $61,000 / year + benefits. The candidate must have obtained a PhD degree (in astro, physics, or applied math or equivalent) by the start of the position.

Will develop the analytic formulation of the low Mach number equation set with rotation.

Will create self-consistent methods for initializing rotating equilibrium stellar models.

Will implement new algorithm ideas in the Maestro hydrodynamics code and perform verification tests.

Will assist in performing simulations of convection in massive stars in the lead up to core-collapse.

Will present research findings at collaboration and national/international meetings.

Other duties as assigned.
