Job Summary: The University of Georgia (UGA) seeks an innovative, collaborative, and creative faculty member to serve as an instructor in the Intensive English Program (IEP), part of the Division of Academic Enhancement (DAE). The DAE is a unit of the Office of Instruction (OVPI) whose central mission is to provide campus-wide leadership, collaboration, and support on matters related to instruction. Housed within the DAE, the IEP is an EAP program whose mission is to offer a rigorous, supportive, and student-centered English language program that will help students to develop the English language proficiency and the cultural competence they need to enter and succeed in American Universities. Serving as an instructor, this 100% instructional position requires teaching a maximum of 18 hours a week within the IEP in each 8-week session, two session in fall and two in spring. As needs dictate, the load may be decreased to allow for alternative instructional duties. The instructor will also collaborate closely with fellow faculty as well as the Director of the IEP and of the DAE in the innovation of the curricula and across relevant DAE services, programs, and initiatives. Purposeful integration within programming beyond the IEP curricula will enhance the experiences and overall success of UGA's students served by the DAE as well as create synergy among faculty and staff of the Division. The ideal candidate would have an established record of teaching adult ESL learners in the United States or overseas and an understanding of applied linguistics or language education as well as knowledge of student learning outcomes. The candidate should also have a successful record of collaboration and innovation in higher education. Minimum Qualifications: A master's degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, or a closely related field. At least two years of experience in teaching ESL learners, especially in college settings, either in the United States or overseas. Ability to work in a trans-disciplinary department and curriculum. Evidence of excellent written, oral, and/or visual communications skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Some coursework in a doctoral program in TESOL or applied linguistics. Ability to speak an additional language or languages. Expertise in developing placement tests and achievements tests (and rubrics) in grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Experience advising students who are studying English in preparation to enter undergraduate or graduate degree programs. Experience helping EAP students prepare for graduate school (for example, experience teaching a graduate-level writing course). Experience teaching in a CEA accredited program. Ability to write goals objectives and SLOs for a CEA accredited program. Experience serving on CEA accreditation committees, especially on curriculum and student achievement committees. Prior success designing and developing new curricula and/or co-curricular programs. Extensive knowledge of student learning outcomes and program evaluation. Evidence of the ability to work in a collaborative atmosphere.
