Position Summary:

At the Long Island State Veterans Home, our Occupational Therapists are responsible for assessing, evaluating and planning treatment for all residents. They carry out treatments on restorative residents and supervise the maintenance care provided by COTAs and Aides. The OT also functions as a resource for all other allied health workers and attends interdisciplinary team meetings to coordinate goals and treatment plans.

Duties of an Occupational Therapist may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs admission, annual, and status change assessments of assigned residents within designated time frames, make clinically sound recommendations, and follows up on each item, determining rehab nursing, restorative, or maintenance needs.
  • Evaluates residents and Adult Day Care registrants prescribed for Occupational Therapy and establishes proper treatment techniques, realistic goals, and treatment plans for restorative and maintenance residents, carries out restorative care, and supervises maintenance care performed by the COTA.
  • Designs nursing rehab protocols for each resident, instruct Nursing in its implementation, and supervise the COTA in follow-up instruction.
  • Schedules and prepares for resident treatment, considering interventions and appointments carried out by other team members.
  • Works closely with the nursing staff, physicians, and all other departments to assure an interdisciplinary approach to resident care. Represent Occupational Therapy at interdisciplinary care meetings and addresses any problems associated with rehabilitation, ADL’s, and safety. Completes appropriate sections of the MDS and CCP within designated time frames.
  • Completes all necessary reports, inventories, equipment requests, and chart documentation as per policy and procedure.
  • Responsible for maintaining Occupational Therapy services in accordance with standards established by the medical staff, the American Occupational Therapy Association, and any state, local, or federal standards which may apply.
  • Responsible for the daily and periodic inspection and maintenance of all equipment being used within Occupational Therapy Clinic and makes recommendations as necessary to the Senior OT.
  • Performs daily billing on the Touch Screen, reviews billing weekly, completes monthly log and checks MD orders to meet fiscal and regulatory guidelines.
  • Working Conditions:

    Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries, as well as weather related situations.

    Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy from an approved & accredited institution. NYS licensure. Minimum of two years’ experience in the field.

    Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy. Two years of combined professional clinical experience in physical dysfunction occupational therapy and/or in SNF.
