Occupational Summary
As the Duke School of Medicine moves towards its vision of an integrated home for research combined with world class clinical care in a learning and evidence-based academic environment, the Department of Anesthesiology is positioning itself at the heart of these initiatives through the growth of its IT Solutions Team. The ideal candidate will facilitate, coordinate and monitor the design, implementation and maintenance of research databases for the Duke University Center for Translational Pain Medicine (CTPM) and serve as a liaison among clinical and analytic research users. Work Performed Design, implement and maintain databases for the Duke University Center for Translational Pain Medicine (CTPM) to include patient research data and specimens as well as legacy study materials. Prepare guidelines for use in all data automation efforts and establish common definition for each automated data element provided or used. Assist data users and applications development teams in planning efforts by advising them of data conventions and definitions. Resolve conflicts arising over the creation, control and use of data; develop and enforce data base use guidelines. Prepare interim and final reports on study datasets, including summary statistics of enrollment and other variables. Convert and upload datasets in formats useful for collaboration and public data sharing resources. Establish and maintain an index to all research data and provide information to users regarding location and accessibility of data; monitor requests for and creation of analytical datasets. Monitor database performance and serve as quality control agent for database use. Improve data models and refine ETL processes on a recurring interval. Provide consultation and training sessions to CTPM database users. Serve as a liaison to database vendors to ensure current training, equipment, conventions and updates are maintained. Ensure that external and internal regulations and policies governing data management are met including regulations concerning security, auditability and privacy. Provide initial authorizations to application developers on test data bases. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Proficiency with SQL language. Experience with Microsoft SQL Server (preferred), Oracle database systems, or Postures / MySQL databases. Database design for large research datasets. Database ETL experience between large and complex systems. Prefer experience with lab and research software such as statistical programming in SAS and R, or LIMS specimen-tracking software. Minimum Qualifications


Education

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science, or a computer-related field or the equivalent coursework or technical training.

Experience

Work requires four years of progressive programming or database administration experience to include design, implementation, tuning,backup, recovery, modification and reorganization of mainframe administrative relational databases for a large/complex computer network. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
