International Student Advisor

Description/Job Summary
This position is responsible for the review, processing, and certification of students requesting an F-1 student visa. This position is also responsible for assisting the Coordinator of International Student Services and the Director of Admissions with ensuring that international students understand the Enrollment process, USCIS Student visa regulations, as well as those that pertain to J1 and B1/B2 requesting change of status. This position will respond to requests from the College and USCIS regarding enrollment status and/or legal status of students enrolled on F-1 Student visas at BCCC.
Responsibilities/Duties
Essential Functions
  • Must have extensive knowledge of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services F-1 student visa regulations and laws
  • Must stay abreast of legislation and regulatory changes as they pertain to F-1 student visa status
  • Must be competent in the use of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System Database (SEVIS)
  • Supervise the issuance and maintenance of F-1 visas
  • Ensure appropriate advising to international students; communicate and educate campus staff and faculty on F-1 visa federal regulations
  • Monitor international students' academic progress in order to comply with current and new USCIS regulations and tracking system compliance
  • Assist Coordinator with necessary interventions with USCIS and US Department of State and other government agencies as problems arise with students
  • Complete USCIS reports as required
  • Serve as liaison between the College and USCIS, US DOS, and USICE regarding persons on student visa
  • Assist students with all USCIS application processes for obtaining or maintaining student status for enrollment (Examples: change of visa status, transfer procedures, legal USCIS reinstatement procedures, extension of stay).
  • Plan and execute informational workshops of specific interest to international students (Employment options, Taxes, Social Security, etc.)
  • Must have broad knowledge of USCIS regulation pertaining to change of students for several visa types including B1/B2, J1, J2, H1, H1b, and H4 that are common at BCCC
  • Advise the International Student's Club
  • Assist Coordinator of International Student Services with the development, implementation, and facilitation of multicultural workshops and events that promote diversity and inclusion
  • Seek innovative uses of technological advances to enhances services
  • Respond to the most sensitive requests for information and complaints
  • Serve on a variety of college committees
  • Assist with the Admissions Office with data entry, application processing for the general population as needed
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct
  • Participates with Commencement planning and/or activities
  • Maintains membership and active participation in professional organizations (ie NAFSA)
  • Other related duties as assigned
