Chair, Department of Philosophy (Associate or Full Professor)

The Department of Philosophy (www.philosophy.illinoisstate.edu) invites applications for the position of Department Chair, for a 12-month, 5-year term (renewable), with a preferred start date of 1 July 2018. AOS and AOC: open. The Chair will be expected to provide vision and guidance, to promote innovative teaching and research, and to teach one course per year. The department has a special interest in candidates who can support the core values of both the department and the University, which include shared governance and diversity, and who can support the wide range of research strengths of our current faculty. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in philosophy or closely related field, with a substantial record of research and teaching. A record of institutional service and leadership, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage the administrative needs of a medium-sized Philosophy department are also required. State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position.

The department typically has between 50 and 60 majors, participates in teaching a large number of general education courses, and has a significant interdisciplinary profile, with connections to cognitive science, religious studies, biology, environmental studies, and women’s and gender studies.
