Faculty - Assistant Professor - Technical Communication & Writing Studies

Summary:
The Utah Valley University Department of English and Literature invites applications for a tenure-track position in Rhetoric and Composition to begin August 2018.

A successful candidate for the position will teach first-year composition, technical communication, grant writing, and other advanced writing courses. The candidate will join a thriving cohort of Writing Studies and Technical Communication colleagues in support of the department's Writing Studies Emphasis, Minor in Writing Studies, and certificate in Editing and Document Design. Standard teaching load is 4/4, with opportunities for reassigned time for Writing Program Administration or other administrative work.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in theories and teaching of technical communication and professional writing, rhetorical theory and have experience with document design, document management, and usability testing. We seek a colleague who expects to serve on department and university committees to work toward promoting an advanced writing requirement across academic departments at UVU. Preferred secondary interests include new media studies, gender studies, feminist rhetorics, posthuman studies, and writing for social change.

A Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or closely related field is required at time of appointment.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a PH.D in English or a closely related field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching courses in writing, rhetoric, and technical communication.
  • Knowledge of principles and methodologies of teaching of subject matter and course content.
  • Knowledge in curriculum development and instructional strategies and techniques in education.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, program development and evaluation.
  • Skills in counseling, advising techniques and interpersonal communications.
  • Skills in public speaking and writing with a variety of individuals and groups.
  • Ability to motivate, manage, and evaluate students and work effectively with people.
  • Ability to follow written and oral procedures and instructions.

Physical Requirements:
Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment. Requires regular sitting and standing. Must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. Must be able to communicate effectively. Requires large classroom, small group and interpersonal interactions with students, faculty, and members of the campus.
