Department Marketing Statement

The Department of Art and Design is NASAD accredited. It curates two outstanding contemporary art galleries – the Mary S. Byrd Gallery on campus, and the Westobou Gallery of Art downtown. The Department is actively participating in the contemporary national and international scenes of art and scholarship.  Last year’s guest presenters included Kara Walker and James Elkins. Recently, LiHong Li from Jiangsu University served as a Visiting Artist in the Department, bringing expertise in the arts of traditional and contemporary Chinese painting and calligraphy. The Department is one of a very select few in the country to house a LASER (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) program, which enables and showcases collaborative intersections between art and science, as sponsored by the National Academy of Science.

Augusta, GA, is ranked by some websites among the top ten overall cities in the USA for a balanced quality of life. It is growing and thriving, with its greater-metropolitan area approaching half a million, yet it is not dense, with beautiful nature in arm’s reach. Located on the south bank of the Savannah River, midway between the Great Smoky Mountains and coastal beaches; Augusta is within a few hours of the cultural centers of Atlanta, Asheville, Savannah, Athens, Columbia, Greenville, and Charleston. The Morris Museum of Art, the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, the Augusta Ballet, the Jessye Norman School of the Arts, the symphony, theater, and events at the James Brown Arena establish a rich cultural milieu. And of course Augusta is home to the world-renowned Masters Golf Tournament.

Due to a $50 million contribution from the state of Georgia, Augusta is now slated to become one of the leading centers for cyber security in the nation. This is bringing a huge influx of leading edge businesses and investments, further transforming cultural activities, including arts and design, providing new jobs, and energizing the historical downtown district. The graphic design track is in part intended to provide workforce development for this expanded economy.
