Reports to: Associate Dean for Assessment and Educational Development
Summary: Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Assessment and Educational Development this position plays a key role in providing assessment, faculty development, and educational development including but not limited to: institutional and program assessment, quality improvement, course and faculty evaluations. Consults with and provides assistance to WVSOM colleagues on designing, implementing and analyzing assessment methodologies. In the absence of the Associate Dean for Assessment and Educational Development, this person oversees the following departmental functions: institutional accreditation; institutional data repository; statistical services; institutional reporting; education technology and medical education innovations and the Office of National Boards and Exam Center.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides management and analysis of academic data to support academic planning, academic program assessment, and both internal and external reporting. Internal and external reporting will include but not be limited to data from both quantitative and qualitative sources.
- Provides direction for curriculum evaluation and assessment, specifically for educational outcomes, educational evaluation methods, competencies tracking, and curriculum review processes. Primarily concerned with the improvement of learning outcomes from year one through residency years by setting up appropriate accountability systems.
- Supports program development and evaluation for Preclinical Education, Predoctoral Clinical Education, and the Mountain State Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution (MSOPTI).
- Manages the system for student feedback on: program, courses, and faculty teaching performance.
- In close cooperation with appropriate faculty/administrators, monitors and improves assessment of student and resident performance.
- Consults with and provides assistance to other WVSOM departments on institutional and program assessment, training on assessment, implementation, and quality improvement.
- Provides support to the Institutional Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Committee.
- Provides leadership in designing and using evaluation data in implementing program improvement.
- Creates a vision for faculty development for the institution.
- Provides leadership in faculty development by: designing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive program of faculty development to assist faculty at all career stages for pre- and post-doctoral programs, on-campus faculty and off-campus preceptors, and MSOPTI’s DMEs, Program Directors, Clinical Preceptors and Attendings including also aspects of faculty development event planning.
- Coordinates and actively participates in the New Faculty Orientation program and provides close mentorship to new faculty during their first year.
- Enhances teaching effectiveness by consulting with individual faculty to facilitate growth in appropriate pedagogy, curriculum design, and assessment of student learning.
- Provides classroom observation and feedback about teaching when requested.
- Stays current in the field of teaching, learning, and assessment, maintaining a personal scholarly agenda, including regular research, publications, and/or appropriate national-level presentations in the field of faculty development and assessment.
- Consults with department chairs, Associate and Assistant Deans, and appropriate committees regarding faculty development needs.
- Conducts an annual needs assessment with all stakeholders (e.g. faculty, preceptors, Regional Assistant Deans, etc.)
- Maintains the WVSOM faculty development website.
- Monitors national developments in health professions education, in order to recommend implementation of new and innovative curricular programs and assessment strategies and methods to the Associate Dean for Assessment and Educational Development, to assure that WVSOM maintains a “cutting edge” educational program.
- Conducts appropriate educational research.
Other Job Responsibilities
- May assist with the administrative management and oversight for institutional accreditation; institutional data repository; statistical services; institutional reporting; faculty development, medical education; education technology and medical education innovations and the Office of National Boards and Exam Center.
- Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Assessment and Educational Development and others on curriculum, assessment, research, and osteopathic medical education initiatives.
- Actively involved in institutional meetings, which may include the WVSOM Curriculum Committee or other WVSOM or MSOPTI committees as elected, appointed or directed.
- Represents WVSOM in state, regional and national activities.
- Teaches and facilitates in the curriculum as requested.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in Educational Measurement or other related fields or a DO/MD with a degree in an education related field. Experience in educational assessment and in medical education is desired. A combination of education and recent and relevant experience may also be considered.
This is a full time faculty position (state funded), within the Office of Assessment and Educational Development and is exempt for FLSA provisions regarding overtime. There is an excellent state benefits package including relocation. Salary and faculty rank is commensurate with education and experience. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and will require regular evening and weekend scheduling. Some travel including overnight travel is required.
