Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelors Degree preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Required: Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant experience in information technology. Experience with server and security administration; networking configuration and concepts; virtualization technology (Microsoft, VMware, or Citrix); and Windows and Apple desktop support.
Knowledge or certification in Information Security.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Project Management Skills.
Preferred: Knowledge with typical application components such as web servers, applications servers, database software (Oracle and SQL), middleware and underlying infrastructure devises (WAN and LAN devices, operation systems for server platforms, workstations, and a broad range of applications, host and network security devices).
A solid understanding of application penetration (both manual and automated), and vulnerability scanning and analysis as well as skill in careful, limited live testing in live production environments.
Experience working in higher education,
Experience working directly with students, faculty, and staff.
Knowledge of best practices in educational technology.
Ability to develop and conduct flexible training for people with a wide variety of technical knowledge.
Linux system administration and scripting experience (Perl, Python, or Bro).
Proven project managment skills and experience with seeing projects through from beginning to end
Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with people of vaired comupter skill levels.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and to work around daily interruptions.
Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
The Systems Administrator and Security Specialist has a wide range of responsibilities and duties. This role is responsible for establishing, implementing and operating secruity standards that align with application, system or campus policies. This position will work under the Director of Computing Services, but is expected to make independent decisions and establish and maintain an effective working relationship with faculty, staff, and students.
The UW School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) has earned a reputation as one of the leading schools of veterinary medicine in America. Located in several facilities on and near the scenic University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, the school houses a modern veterinary medical teaching hospital, UW Veterinary Care; high-tech equipment; and high-quality lab and classroom space for teaching and research. Within the school is the Computing Services department, which provides exceptional technology support for the SVM and its satellite offices. The current satellite facilities include Biotron, Charmany Instructional Facility (Mineral Point Road), Influenza Research Institute (IRI in UW Research Park), the IRI Annex, and the Robert P. Hanson Biomedical Sciences Lab.
The computing Services department offers a unique "walk-in" support service model, which provides face-to-face service and support. This position requires great attention to detail and a very high level of customer service. The Computing Services department offers a relaxed working atmosphere and great opportunites to work with emerging technology.
