Open Rank Visiting Scholar in Digital Media and Culture
We invite applications for a visiting open-rank scholar or scholar/practitioner in digital media and culture on a 1-year full-time, terminal appointment. Possible areas of research/practice/pedagogy might include, but are not limited to: social media, remix media, digital activism, fan studies, Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality, critical video game studies, and global digital media.
Occidental’s Media Arts & Culture Department integrates theory and practice, and the ability to engage both is particularly desirable, but a Ph.D. in hand and demonstrated critical and media studies teaching experience is paramount. Our location in Los Angeles, one of the most vibrant and ethnically diverse cities in the country, as well as a world hub for film/media and art, provides unparalleled opportunities for experiential learning that we hope the successful candidate will leverage in their teaching. SUMMARY OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOALS
The position entails teaching five courses, which include one of our major gateway courses, Introduction to Digital Media and Culture, as well as four electives geared toward the candidate’s areas of specialization, to be listed in our catalog under one of the following themes: Topics in Digital Culture; Topics in Media Representation; Topics in Media Theory and Practice; Topics in Global Media; or Topics in Film and Media Studies. In addition to these courses, the position requires programming a semester of the Oxy Cinematheque Screening Series.
