Chair, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Illinois State University is seeking applications for the position of Chair, preferably to begin July 1, 2018.  As the Department’s chief administrative officer, the Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders:

PROFILE:   The successful candidate will manage the personnel and resources of a school of approximately 11 faculty and 17 administrative professional staff, who take pride in providing exemplary instruction and supervision, and making significant service and scholarship contributions. The Department has over 220 undergraduate students studying Communication Sciences and Disorders and over 100 graduate students pursuing a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology or a Clinical Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.) degree.

College of Arts and Sciences:

The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest of Illinois State University's 6 Colleges both in student enrollment and staffing. It is a diverse collection of 16 Schools and Departments in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences. It also includes numerous centers and is housed in over 12 buildings on campus. The College is home to 27 majors and 10 secondary education programs.

Qualifications and Responsibilities.  The Chair must be a tenured associate or full professor.  The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field, a substantial record of teaching and research, and demonstrable leadership, management and communication skills. The Chair will be expected to provide leadership, to secure funding resources outside the university, and to foster an atmosphere conducive to teaching, research and clinical education. Applicants also should have demonstrated administrative competencies and interpersonal skills necessary to provide innovative leadership to a productive, well-functioning department. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to shared academic governance and to diversity, broadly defined. Persons holding the position of Chair in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to teach one course per year. State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position. This position is security sensitive and subject to a criminal background investigation based on University policy. Employment is contingent upon the candidate’s passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation.

Rank and Salary.   Rank is at the Associate Professor or Professor level.  This is a twelve-month position, with a salary commensurate with experience.
