Job Description:

Duties and responsibilities include to assist with greenhouse, field, and laboratory work to support the  Citrus Plant Pathology research and extension program at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center located in Immokalee.  Work will focus on the development of control methods and the host-pathogen-vector interaction for citrus pathogens.

Greenhouse and field work will include assisting in setting up, maintaining, and monitoring trials; collecting, storing, and processing samples from field and greenhouse trials; and assisting in field and greenhouse pesticide spray trials, involving the mixing, handling, and application of pesticides.

Laboratory work will include recording data and keeping laboratory notes, organizing and documenting plant and insect samples, and assisting in the processing of these samples; preparation of laboratory solutions and microbiological media, and general lab maintenance.

Selected candidate will be required to:

  • Work under harsh conditions, such as heat and humidity, for prolonged periods of time
  • Stand and/or walk for extended periods of time
  • Work with pesticides
  • Lift moderately heavy objects for extended periods of time
  • Occasionally travel to field sites distant from the research station which will require a valid driver's license

Minimum Requirements:

Associates degree in an appropriate area of specialization, or a high school diploma or equivalent with one or more years of related experience equipping the incumbent with knowledge, skills, and expertise to successfully perform the duties of the position.  Experience in basic laboratory and greenhouse procedures.

Preferred Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in biology, botany, microbiology or other closely related life science field.  Experience in plant propagation and maintenance, greenhouse maintenance, pesticide application, sample preparation and handling, and basic laboratory skills, such as preparing microbiological media and chemical solutions, pipetting, PCR and gel electrophoresis.
