The Illinois State Water Survey of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has been a leader in the study of water resources for more than a century. Our research and service programs provide citizens, industries, and government agencies at all levels with timely, science-based information and analyses necessary to manage our water resources wisely for economic development and a sustainable environment.
The Illinois State Water Survey is seeking a Visiting Hydroclimatologist to conduct scientific research and analysis related to climate issues affecting urban and agricultural surface water resources in support of the Principal Investigator(s).
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform statistical analysis of hydrologic/hydro-climatic data, and develop statistical models of hydrologic and hydro-climatic processes.
• Evaluate hydrologic impacts of projected climates using hydrologic modeling
• Ensure quality of data used in the models, model design, calibrations and applications
• Analyze model results; prepare and public results in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals.
• Present research results at meetings with sponsoring agencies and conferences
• Provide technical support with preparation of research proposals and other tasks as needed to support the scientific research efforts of the Principal Investigator(s)
Position Requirements and Qualifications:
Education Required: MS degree in Engineering (Civil, Water Resources, Environmental or similar curriculum)
Preferred: Ph.D. degree in fields listed above.
Experience Required: A minimum of 1 year of applicable work experience; work spent on M.S. thesis/Ph.D. dissertation is applicable.
Preferred: Experience with precipitation of frequency analysis, using L-moments or similar approaches, flood frequency analysis. Experience with analysis of statistical and dynamical downscaling climate data.
Training Preferred: Certified Professional Engineering Certification
Knowledge Required: Course work and/or experience in hydrologic analyses, climate-related studies and statistics/data mining. Effective communication, personal relations, organizational and team work skills. Demonstrated ability to perform with a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities and stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision.
Preferred: Familiarity with software in hydrologic analyses such as SWAT, HEC-HMS, HSPF, VIC, and ArcGIS desireable.
This is a visiting full-time position paid on a 12-month basis. Position may become a regular position at a later date depending on funding and programmatic need.
