Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in an archives or special collections.
- Knowledge and experience processing archival materials.
- Experience with public services in an archives or library.
- Experience as a supervisor of staff.
- Strong communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated leadership within a library or archives setting.
- Experience with library systems such as Ex Libris/ALMA, OCLC, ArchivesSpace, and Aeon.
- Knowledge of current national data content and structure standards such as DACS and EAD.
- Knowledge of basic preservation and conservation standards for archival materials.
- Knowledge of basic records management processes and best practices.
- Knowledge digital records processes and best practices.
- Experience with grant-writing.



Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Collections and Archives, the University Archivist and Head of UW-Madison Archives provides vision and leadership for the Archives and Records Management Department. The University Archivist and Head of UW-Madison Archives provides expertise in archives and records administration; access to university records and archives in all formats; instructional activities and research support; and developing events, exhibitions, and presentations that interpret the university's history for a diverse audience.

The University Archivist and Head of UW-Madison Archives must be service-oriented and have excellent communication skills. The person in this position must be a dynamic public speaker, comfortable in front of diverse audiences. They will work in a highly collaborative work environment, which requires an ability to work with a variety of departments and colleagues across the library system and campus.

The University Archivist and Head of UW-Madison Archives supervises four full-time staff members: the Head of the Oral History Program, Digital and Media Archivist, Processing Archivist, and Records Officer. Additionally, the University Archivist and Head of UW-Madison Archives oversees interns and student employees directly and indirectly.

Archives and Records Management, located in Steenbock Memorial Library, is one of four libraries in the division of Special Collections & Archives, along with the Department of Special Collections, the Kohler Art Library, and the Mills Music Library. A unit of the General Library System, Archives and Records Management contains over 26,000 c.f. of paper materials, over 2 million images, over 1600 oral histories, plus other media in many formats (audio tapes, film, videocassettes, transcriptions disks, electronic formats, etc.).
