Position Summary

Michigan State University, Department of Medicine, Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine is seeking a PhD at the Assistant Professor level.  This new research position is a non-tenured, non-clinician, and fixed term position.  The candidate would have a PhD or equivalent degree in a field leading to expertise in the area of environmental and occupational exposure assessment and analysis.  Activities of the person to be hired would be to conduct exposure assessments for epidemiologic studies, conduct workplace investigations of fatalities and injuries and perform workplace/community based risk assessments. The Division is responsible for conducting workplace injury and illness surveillance for the state and has a strong working relationship with the Michigan OSHA program, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Michigan Worker Compensation Agency. Given the land grant status of MSU and its strong agricultural research structure and extension service, the candidate will also have the opportunity to apply their skills to trans boundary animal diseases (TADs), disease outbreaks (epidemics), pathogen transfer between herds, prevention of endemic status within newly infected herds, and zoonotic disease transfer. Specific duties include: working with MSU Occupational and Environmental Medicine to support employers  and employees in the ongoing quest for a safe workplace by developing and providing training and materials geared towards the identification and prevention of physical, chemical, and biological hazards; obtaining research funding and conduct methodologically rigorous research resulting in scientific peer reviewed publications as well as lay publications suitable for targeting preventative activities; developing an ongoing dialogue with MSU faculty, specialists, extension educators, unions and industry stakeholders to identify existing and emerging challenges to protect both worker health; and to conduct field-based assessments utilizing standard multimedia sampling techniques and laboratory analyses to identify and characterize source(s) of exposure.
