The University of Florida’s College of Medicine – Jacksonville (UF COM-J) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Anesthesiology.
UF COM-J anesthesiologists provide services at UF Health Jacksonville hospital, a private, not-for-profit hospital affiliated with the UF Health Science Center campuses in Jacksonville and Gainesville; and in North Jacksonville, at UF Health North, a 92-bed hospital, 24/7 adult and pediatric emergency center, outpatient surgery center and a medical office building. UF Health Anesthesiology – Jacksonville provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient care for patients undergoing surgery, including: ambulatory anesthesia, cardiovascular anesthesia, critical care medicine, general anesthesia, obstetrical anesthesia (including labor epidurals), out-of-operating-room anesthesia (e.g. interventional radiology), pain management, pediatric anesthesia, and regional anesthesia.
In addition to hospital-based services, our anesthesiologists offer outpatient services at the UF Health Pain Management Center – Jacksonville, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program that helps patients cope with the debilitating effects of pain. The center offers complete services for the evaluation, diagnosis and management of acute, chronic or oncologic (cancer) pain disorders.
The UF COM-J Department of Anesthesiology has an independent anesthesiology residency program in Jacksonville, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. We offer four positions each year, for the full three years of anesthesiology residency (PGY-2 to PGY-4) training at UF Health Jacksonville medical center and have also four linked PGY-1 preliminary surgery positions with the department of surgery, that have been organized to give the best preparation to enter our anesthesiology residency program. We also offer an excellent one year Obstetrical Anesthesiology Fellowship.
The department is one of the main clinical sites for CRNA students from the University of North Florida and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (Naval Hospital Jacksonville).
The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville is the largest of the three UF colleges - medicine, nursing and pharmacy - located on the approximately 110-acre UF Health Jacksonville campus. The college's 16 clinical science departments house more than 400 faculty members and 300 residents and fellows. The college offers 32 accredited graduate medical education programs. In addition to graduate medical education, clinical rotations in all the major disciplines are provided for students from the UF College of Medicine in Gainesville. Third-year medical students enrolled at UF spend about 25 percent of their training at the Jacksonville campus, gaining valuable experience in an urban setting.
The Anesthesiology Chair will join a strong leadership team that has set its sights on advancing the national profile of UF Health. The population of the area, in conjunction with the strong statewide reputation of UF Health, provides a great opportunity for clinical growth.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine - Jacksonville, the chair is responsible for the overall administrative, academic, and clinical outcomes of the department. UF seeks an accomplished academician and clinician with an M.D. from an accredited school, current board certification, and have a national reputation for clinical, educational and scholarly activities appropriate for appointment to the rank of Professor or Associate Professor in either a clinical or tenure-track position. Candidates must possess significant leadership experience, such as a section or division chief, vice chair or similar role, with demonstrated fiscal and managerial responsibility. It is important for the new Chair to possess a vision to ensure that the Department grows in rank and reputation. The ideal candidate will be able to grow the department’s clinical program in concert with the expansion of UF Health Jacksonville. The candidate should have national recognition and be actively involved in professional societies and physician organizations.
