Reporting to the University's Chief Compliance Officer, the Export/Import Controls Compliance Officer serves as the principal administrative official of New York University with regard to matters related to U.S. and International Export and Import Control laws and Trade Sanction regulations (“Export Compliance”). The incumbent consults with NYU faculty to address potential or actual export compliance issues, e.g., whether a particular research activity is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the Office of Foreign Assets Control Regulations (OFAC), and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), or other applicable international trade regulation regimes. The incumbent has a close working relationship with the NYU Office of General Counsel and key administrative offices, including the Office of Sponsored Programs, Sponsored Programs Administration, Procurement and Logistics. The incumbent also has a close working relationship with the Schools, particularly the Tandon School of Engineering, and with faculty in engineering, the sciences and mathematics throughout NYU's global network.

Required Education:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Master's degree in engineering, science, computer science, business operations or a related field.

Preferred Education:

Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Ph.D. in a science, mathematics or computer science related field.

Required Experience:
At least five (5) years prior experience as a practicing attorney with a good working knowledge of Export Compliance or at least five (5) years experience as a research compliance administrator at a U.S. University or research institution with a good working knowledge of Export Compliance.

Preferred Experience:
Prior experience at a U.S. research university with international research activities and/or international locations with at least seven (7) years experience with export, import and trade control laws, including at least five (5) years prior experience in working in Export Compliance at a U.S. university or research institution.


Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
In-depth knowledge of U.S. Federal Import and Export Control Regulations, with specific emphasis on how they impact research-intensive universities. Technical knowledge of science, including computer science and technology, and engineering sufficient to review government and industry solicitations for research and development projects, as well as research proposals, in order to identify potential import/export control compliance issues. Ability to interact and function effectively with all levels of the organization, including interacting with faculty, staff, and senior management. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to give effective oral presentations to faculty, staff, and other groups who require information on import and export control matters. Ability to represent NYU in interactions with government agencies and university associations. Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to translate information and needs into quantifiable action plans.
